Newport etc...

First posting -- want to recommend and looking for advice. Were in Newport last weekend where we discovered finding good food not totally touristy was tough but came upon some nice surprises. S.O. and I enjoyed the casual atmosphere and beer selection at Mudville also liked their stuffed burgers! Perro Salado, not too busy a little off the beaten track, was inexpensive and also really good. Not straight -up Mexican but sort of 'new' Mexican. Great pork tacos and fried calamari (I know not Mexican but GOOD) fresh Margaritas and friendly but not oppresive service. Fresh, simple, affordable ...

We're now in Westerly and looking for more affordable and tasty meals. Been camping so we've had a lot of burgers would be nice to have Italian (pizza/pasta) or Mexican. We're willing to travel into nearby CT or other nearby RI locales.

I've always been partial to Modesto's on Beach Street in Westerly for Italian. Haven't been for a couple of years, though, so hopefully a Westerly 'hound will chime in. People have been talking good things about Guytano's Cafe on Route 1 and Ventana's Pizza just a bit further down. Can't vouch for either one, although you can't go wrong in Westerly if Italian is what you want! The only halfway decent Mexican in town is Senor Flacos on High Street in Westerly. Having lived in Texas for 10 years, I'm a bit picky about my Mexican <grin> but Flaco's was pretty good for when the jones would hit. They've recently revamped their menu, adding such gringo items as burgers and *shudder* Mexican Lasagna. But I haven't been in since the change, so I can't say one way or another whether it was a good thing.

If you want to go further afield, Noah's and Water Street Cafe in Stonington Borough are excellent. Pretty little town, too.
