providence waterfront seafood?

any suggestions for reasonably priced seafood in the providence area ?. Id like to find something waterfront if possible that has lobster , clams..ect on the menu. Preferably not a fancy restaurant , a cozy ma/pa shack might be nice.

forgot - it's not on the water, but horton's seafood has fantastic fried seafood - easily among the tops in the state yearround - right over the red bridge in east providence. could always pick up a to-go and head down to one of the providence or ep waterfronts (sabin point) for a picnic

Thanks! I'm working in East Providence (new to the area from Los Angeles) and will try Hortons one day. Haven't found many choices for lunch here so far. Mostly we send an assistant to either Seekonk Chili's or Chelos, or into Providence.

Can't wait to try a new place.

pretty bleak pickins in providence - although if you're not up for a trip to south county, there's always a quick trip to the east bay - quitos in bristol and the blount clam shack in warren for starters.

You could always do Watermans Grille. It is on the water, although there is no outdoor seating.

maybe i'm wrong, but i think if you're looking for a ma and pa shack, you're going to have to get out of providence. the waterfront in providence just has a couple of bars and... anything else?

I have to agree with celeriac. Providence is a big zero for seaside casual ambience - too high up the bay and too close to commercial piers (read "big petroleum holding tanks"). A quick jog down to Iggy's in Warwick would do the trick for ya.

Now that I'm thinking about it, though, what about a riverside experience? It would have to be more upscale than a ma/pa experience, but what about some of the places that cater to Waterfire folks? I'm a South County girl and don't know much about you folks "up north" <grin>. Perhaps a Providence 'hound will chime in.

I have the same dilemma for visiting parents next week: We'd like riverside, preferably outdoors and walking distance from the Biltmore. Sort of upscale is fine. But they are 70+ years old parents so are cost conscious and don't want to feel ripped off or sit in loud restaurants.

            I am deciding between:

            Hemenways
            Waterplace
Providence Oyster Bar (I know no water view -- but worth the walk across the highway?)
            Waterman Grille

            Part Two:
Where could we walk on the way back to the Biltmore for a nice coffee/ice cream...

            Any thoughts?

            Thanks!

As far as cost goes, Waterman grill is your best bet. I have read somewhat mixed reviews, but the one time I went the food was very good and reasonably priced. To get a waterview I would call ahead for reservations, though.

Can't comment on the food, but there is no way Waterman is within walking distance of the Biltmore, with 70 year old parents (unless of course they are active marathoners).

If you are willing to upscale there is Neuvo. In addition, while Hemenways has outdoor seating, that seating area is not on or even facing the river. Parkside is across the street and does has a few tables outside with a river view.

Agreed. There's no way they could walk to Waterman.

                  Also, it's Cafe Nuovo.

I've ditched the walking idea. So I've Waterman Grille in the mix, as is Chez Pascal.

I haven't heard much about Prov Oyster Bar? Should that be an option?

Someone else recommended Gatehouse. But is was that taken over by Waterman...?

                    Thanks for all your suggestions.

tough call - best bet is m&s in the biltmore if you're set on seafood within walking distance. (yep, they're a chain, which seems to be heresy on chow)
if they're from out of town, and loading em in the car for sightseeing's an option, bristol's a good bet - buncha inexpensive places along thames st. along with 2 ice cream parlors, all looking down the bay

A former waiter told me they have no air conditioning at M and S. Anyone?
