Best pubs & roadhouses, Yarmouth to Windsor to Lunenburg and around?

CATing into Yarmouth on 8/10 for a ten day holiday in the Weymouth area at DC's abode.

We would love some recs from the N.S. Hounds for the best pubs, bars, roadhouses and yes, dives, if they exist here. This is not our first time in N.S. We've done the upscale scene in Halifax, and around, a couple of times and will do so again on this trip. But we're roadhouse people who like dining at the bar and trading barbs and sharing laughs with the publicans and their regulars. Good pub grub is a definite plus, but lack there of isn't a deal breaker if the "craic" is good. I've linked three examples from past visits that we've enjoyed and hopefully you'll contribute some more. Again, not Halifax-Dartmouth area but anything on the Eastern or Western shores.TIA

  1. I can recommend Rudder's in Yarmouth... good pub food (try the rappie pie) and beers brewed on-site.

If you make it as far up as Chester, the Rope Loft offers a nice balance of atmosphere and decent food, while the Focsle offers plenty of local color... though perhaps not much else! An interesting dive.

        Hey Greg B,
Thanks for all the recs and the link. In looking at some older Op's, I found The Knot Pub in Lunenburg has some good recs. Have you been there as well? Not a pub per se, but I'm going to The Kilted Frenchman for the name if no other reason, LOL!

Obtw, The Rope Loft Pub is at 36 Water St. in Chester no matter what it says below :-)

      2. Just want to let you know that the Spitfire Arms is in Windsor, N.S., not in Truro, and the name of the community in which you will find Lane's is Milton, Queens County, N.S. This should make it easier for you to find these spots -- Truro and Windsor are about 2 hours drive apart and, to my knowledge, there is no community named Queens in N.S.

        Enjoy your trip!

          1. re: mwright

Thanks for pointing that out mwright,
But, frustratingly, I already know that. The new "link to a place" feature sometimes let's you edit and sometimes it doesn't. In the States, the zip codes are included but in N.S. the postal codes seem to be strangely absent. In both of those instances you've cited I gave up after several attempts at editing :-))

Btw, I have been to all three of these places, so I know where they are. But it is misleading to anybody else who might be interested in checking them out. If you click on all three of them they are mapped in the correct locations. Small matter, but since we're clearing things up, The Captain Barss Pub At Lane's is in Liverpool the next town over from Milton.

The Knot Pub in Lunenburg is SO yummy...and they have Alexander Keith's red ON TAP!

                    Heyteacher!
(I like that!) Alexander Keith's is duly noted and field research is in order. :-))

I would not consider Lanes as a true english pub, however make your own judgement

                    • A bit late now, but for the record here is the list of my favourite pubs in NS:

                      The Knot - Lunenburg
For the atmosphere, the service, the chowder and their Propeller Knot Pub Ale. If you're not in the mood for beer, go for a double dark and stormy and hope they haven't run out of Propeller ginger beer.

                      The King's Arms - Kentville
For the patio/garden. The meal I had there was ok, but it was on their busiest day of the year, so I don't know if I was eating off of their regular menu or not. A very English pub and pub garden though.

                      The Spitfire Arms - Windsor
For the selection of beer, the atmosphere and the fact that they carry cask conditioned ales. The first time I ate there, the food was amazing. The time we went back we were disappointed - it was good, but not the amazing meal we'd remembered from the year before.

                      The Dock - New Glasgow
For the atmosphere, the Guiness and the great hosts. Also pretty good food.

Not too late at all Yermum!
Bought some Propeller ESB in Meteghan yesterday. I wished that they'd had more of Prop's line to sample but I will track more down. Their ESB is a damn tasty one. Thanks for the additional recs.

In that case, you're going to want to try Propeller's IPA. The best of their offerings in my opinion.

                            Enjoy!

Garrison's was the available microbrew on yesterday crawl. Stopped by Brian Keevil's Ye Olde Town Pub after touring the town just for drinks. Don't be put off by the name, it's a fine Local serving pubgrub and some decent fish options. He had Garrison's Tall Ship Amber and the Irish Red on draught. The Amber was only so,so but the Irish Red was very good.

Later on, after touring Port Royale, Delap's Cove and environs, we slid into the End of the Line Pub. The excellent Martello Stout by Garrison was easily the best of the three for the day. We had Digby scallops done two way and chips. They were all perfectly prepared. No Sysco system chips here, by the way. Hand cut and properly crisp & tender at once. I knew it was a good sign when Meghan, the barmaid, without asking plunked down malt vinegar in front of us. I would definitely return here again for the the craic, the music, the food, the spirits and OBTW, did I tell you the craic?

                          2. Most have already beat me to the punch re: The Knot, but IF food is an issue there, check out the fish and chips and avoid the mussels. And do try the Alexander Keith's "White".

                              1. Try the Mersey House Pub and Restaurant in Liverpool Nova Scotia. All reports are that they have the best fish and chips on the south shore. Nice light english batter and you can taste the fish, with handcut fries. Also people have been telling me that they have the best seafood chowder with people travelling from Virginia and Winsconsin to sample. Truly an authentic english style pub.
