Taylor's Refresher in the Ferry Building is pretty diner-ish. There is also Mijita for Mexican.

Those are good, but not cheap. I remember feeling slightly stupid for paying what I did for fish tacos. The view from Mijita is nice, though.

Mijita is expensive for what you get, and the food is mediocre.

Maybe if you could be a little more specific about what you mean by "cheap eats" that would help.

There's not a whole lot of decent Mexican downtown. If I were going for cheap eats in the Civic Center area I'd go for Vietnamese or I'd hit Gyro King.

thanks everyone. ended up walking all the way to ghiradelli to have in-and-out... hey, there's none in new york!!!

i will have to try some of the other suggestions though. i should've been more specific about "cheap eats" which for me means $20 or under per person including beverage and tip.

I love the way NYers walk! And after you've walked all that way, you can enjoy your burger without guilt!

We used to enjoy Absinthe near the Civic Center. It had a nice, reasonably priced 3 course prix fixe, before theatre/symphony menu. Not cheap, but a good value
