Marmalade-Opening in El Segundo

Fresser Aug 1, 2007 04:24 PM

The new Plaza El Segundo location is opening Aug. 2nd according to the folks at the corporate office. Marmalade is currently running a Tuesday dinner special for a Lobster or King Crab dinner for $25 bucks. A nice addition to So. Bay dining.

I must take exception to the comment about, "A nice addition to So. Bay dining."

For two years I had to eat at the Westlake Village Marmalade with a client. He loved it. The other diners called it MarmaBarf.

I spent time exploring the menu, and really found nothing amidst the tasteless and expensive selections. The only good thing about it, if that matters, is that the portions were huge.

It really with nothing a pretentious Denny's.

I couldn't agree more. I've never had more poorly prepared breakfasts than the two I have been served at the Sherman Oaks branch. Everything, including the service, was just ridiculously incompetent to the point that it's not even worth discussing the details of the meal. Never again!

      the food looks ok.
      the portions are certainly ok.

if, however, you like that style of food and you like those big portions but you want the food to actually taste GOOD, i'd suggest driving north to 26 beach at 3100 washington (west of lincoln).

OMG I'm dying of laughter. Look up the OP's username 'fresser' in any yiddish dictionary; how appropriate.

Truthfully this thread belongs on the Chains board.

Hi Leetmom! Nice to see you here!
I agree with the next poster. Good for larger groups as there's something for everyone. I actually ate at the SO location today with a friend and our two 80-something mothers! All were content. Our server was actually excellent, although I will admit that over time we've had some that should be taken out back and shot!

            AAAAHHHHH I've been discovered!

(compucook and I are buds IRL and on another forum)

I agree, the Marmalade by us is good for crowds with diverse taste when we have to head to a local meeting place thereafter (like theater). The breakfasts also pretty substantial for what I can get around my area.

Only regional or national chains are discussed on the Chain board. Marmalade has 8 cafe's with the addition of this one in El Segundo, and all of them here in Southern California. So they are correctly discussed on the LA board.

New board suggestion: "Chainlets" for the El Terasco's, Marmalade Cafe's and soon-to-be's like Truxton's.

Yes -- try it and please report back. I tried it 4 times when it opened, and haven't been back because it wasn't great then.
I understood from various conversations with its staff that the location was a trial run for a new chain.

The food here is... food. It's not a bad spot if you have a varied party w/ several in the party that are kevetchy and really indifferent to having "chow quality food." Especially good for family get-togethers with a wide age range and wide range of preferences for food types. That said, the french toast is pretty good. The seared ahi is decent as well.

You know what word should be Yiddish but isn't? Spatula. Also, farfetched.

I dunno, I love the Sherman Oaks one.

Just went today without reading the comments on the board beforehand.

I have to say I was pleasantly surprised, the food was actually decent and if I'd known it's a chain I probably wouldn't even have bothered trying. I have to say I liked it better than Truxton or Second City Bistro.

The service was attentive, but then we were there at 4:30 and it wasn't exactly crowded. The price was a bit high - $6.5 for a kid's quesadilla, and $14 for 'small plate' consisted of 2 crab cakes with salad which was way more than I can finish. The crab cakes were fresh and didn't have any fillers.

No lobster or crab legs special was mentioned.
