food update: my trip to boston
hello all, i'm back in LA and here is my food report as promised. thank you hounds for all of your advice!
my husband (B) and i arrived saturday morning via red eye, fresh from a wedding the previous evening (he the best man, i a little hungover). since the hyatt regency didn't have rooms available that early, we walked over to MIT in a daze. b spent a few nerdy summers there so he gave me a makeshift tour and we ate breakfast at (please don't flame me) anna's taqueria. not only did it bring back fond pre-la-mexican-food memories for b, we were starving and we weren't feeling adventurous. we ordered breakfast burritos and chips/salsa/guac. ironically, that had to have been the healthiest breakfast burrito i've ever had, which was good, because we weren't in the mood for all the grease typical of LA breakfast burritos. (by the way, if you are ever in la and have a hankering for a bb, i IMPLORE you to try the ones at lucky boys). my foodie friends would kill me if they knew that my first boston meal was mexican. ha.
for lunch, we kept it light and ordered soup and sandwiches from au bon pain. i know it's probably like starbucks to you guys, but b looked forward to eating there since we don't have it out here. i'm amazed at the selection of soups.
for dinner, we thoroughly gorged ourselves on a 12 course chinese wedding banquet, replete with fish and lobster. we reached that inevitable point of disgusting fullness and we briefly contemplated fasting for the subsequent days of our trip. until sunday came.
after unintentionally sleeping until noon, we met up with a friend at alive & kicking for lobster sandwiches. i have to say, i wasn't a fan. the amount of mayo frightened me and it was difficult to enjoy the lobster after having amazingly seasoned chinese lobster the previous night. all in all, i found it a bit dull. sorry. afterwards, we went to toscanini's and i very much enjoyed my burnt caramel yogurt and heath bar ice cream. the place is cute and i loved the big table.
for a late afternoon snack, we tried to grab sandwiches at chicacero but it was closed! sadness. it is really odd that it is located near another place proclaims to have the world's #1 sandwiches. we ate something else but it escapes me at the moment.
for dinner, we went to the north end, a truly delightful place. we were fortunate enough to happen upon some kind of weekend festival. we checked out the menus and level of restaurant crowdedness (the more the better) and decided upon giacomo. since it was around 10, we easily got a table. i found my calamari pasta with their red lobster sauce to be decent but we both inhaled my husband's salmon fettucine. i'm assuming the pasta is handmade because that stuff was damn good.
afterwards, i looked forward to getting cupcakes at lulu's but it was closed! i kicked myself for not getting an order before dinner.
for brunch, we went to flour bakery in the south end. i absolutely adore quirky bakeries and i was in awe at flour. in addition to our sandwiches (i loved my lamb + chutney) we split a requisite boston cream pie and sticky bun. dude, that stuff is made with brioche! ah, i was in heaven. after a really awesome walking tour of the area, we stopped by the south end buttery to indulge in a quiche and a cookie. a few hours later, we fed our waning sugar high by indulging in some jp licks ice cream: honeydew and oatmeal. it hit the spot but we preferred toscanini's.
for dinner we went to brookline family restaurant; this was definitely our food highlight of the trip. we honeymooned in turkey last year but are hardpressed to find good turkish food here in LA. we actually had a local friend take us to the purported best iskender restaurant in istanbul and i fell tragically in love with the dish, knowing that i'd never have anything of that quality in the states. WELL, it turns out that the brookline version was far superior. you could just tell that the ingredients, esp the lamb, were better quality (and the istanbul version made my husband sick for a week). we definitely over ordered, your suggestions were well taken. we took 2 full boxes of leftovers back to our hotel and ate it cold while watching forrest gump. it was truly fabulous. and cheap!
by now, we are waddling to harvard square. we had an early lunch at pinnochio's pizza, b's favorite joint in college. i was intrigued by all the construction workers and their good will hunting accents (kidding). afterwards, i got some grape nut ice cream at lizzy's. we have something similar here in LA, "brown bread" at scoops, but in gelato form. i also stopped by hi-rise bakery and picked up a gentrified oreo cookie and chocolate brioche- both excellent. meanwhile, my husband is amazed at my ability to consume copious amounts of sweets. met up with a friend later at au bon pain (for convenience) and picked up some food for our plane ride home.
all in all, i would say it was a very successful eating trip, thanks to all of your advice. we spent less than we budgeted for and felt like we got a good taste of boston. let me know if you need any food advice for LA! :)
Sounds like a great combination of chowish and nostalgia places. And, burnt caramel... YOGURT? I've never seen that at Tosci's before! Burnt caramel is my favorite flavor and I've been trying to cut down on ice cream (not that yogurt is really that much healthier, but it is a little bit). I have got to look for that. Thanks!
thanks for the report, and glad to hear the trek out to brookline village was worth it! (i do really like that place, i think it's one of the few places around that would be in the rotation even if we still lived in LA)
and though i'm definitely not an anna's fan, i think you guys did hit what might be the one of the better branches-- maybe i'll check out their breakfast burritos some time.
also, good job on the marathon eating! :) (by a weird coincidence, i was doing the same in your 'hood: terried, monte alban, kotohira, raku, papa cristos, al gelato, jeonju, new german bakery mochi, pinkberry (multiple times...), brent's, amandine, and i think there's some others that are lost in the haze of carbs and soju...)
