Ate at Amber a couple of years ago because my co-worker from Bombay loved it (and she is one of the best Indian cooks I know - you get spoiled with someone like that for a friend) and took an entire group of us there. The food was delicious (we went for the most spicy stuff), and I would absolutely go back.

Yes, Amber Cafe is part of the Amber India, but instead of a formal sitdown restaurants it's a "fast-ish" food counter service.

The menu has chaats, wraps, a few curries, and Indian pizzas. All items are under $10. So far I've had their papdi chaat, their rogan josh, and a dish whose name I forgot but it's minced lamb on roti. All were very good. They had the same "crispness" of spices (in that I can taste each spice) that Amber and other good Indian places have.

The Amber India website hasn't been updated with Amber Cafe, so in the mean time I'm linking to an article from Metroactive.

I went tonight and was quite disappointed. We ordered the cholle bhatura, aloo tikki (i forget the exact name--it was aloo tikki stuffed with peas. muttar something ki aloo tikki), and the dahi bhalle. The cook surely knew what he was doing--the textures were all exactly right, the bhatura was perfectly made and tasty, and the chickpeas and potatoes were all well-cooked...but they seem to have forgotten to put in any spices! This was one of the blandest Indian meals I've ever had. Perhaps the cook is capable of doing it right, but the mere fact that they served such food to someone without being begged to make it non-spicy will keep me from returning, especially given how many good Indian restaurants are nearby. It was also a bit pricey for chat--everthing was at least $.50 more than I'm used to paying, but $7 for the bhatura cholle was excessive.

On the plus side, their jal (cumin) lassi was tasty, and I hadn't had one before elsewhere. They also serve jal pani ("cumin water"), which I didn't order but am curious about.
