Wi Jammin' Jamaican Food

There’s not much atmosphere other than a huge Jamaican flag mural on the wall. There's some nice Reggae playing in the background. You order and pick up at the counter. The owners/workers are very nice.

I was the only non-black person in there for lunch. This doesn’t bother me one bit; I add it only as information.

All the meals come in a Styrofoam 3-compartment box. There are no plates, and no silverware. You get one plastic fork per dish, no knife.

The chicken with brown gravy is succulent. It’s obviously long-stewed, as it’s so moist and tender. The flavoring is also perfect. All the spices blend-in very well. This was just outstanding. You get one drumstick and one thigh in the small plate.

The steamed cabbage was pretty good, nothing special. And the beans and rice was also pretty pedestrian.

I got it with a Jamaican Cola Champagne (which was orange-colored but tasted like Cherry Coke).

The above was $10, a little steep for what you get.

For atmosphere, Coley’s and Derrick’s are MUCH nicer. And the Styrofoam box presentation certainly does nothing for perceived value. But the chicken was just killer. I’ll probably go back just to try the jerk chicken.

  1. Thanks for the review, I will try take out whenever I have the chance. Have you ever tried Maurice nearby?

    1. re: bad nono

I saw Maurice and Oki Dog across the street. I will be back to try those. There's also a seemingly new "Real Cuban" place about a block east of Wi Jammin. But it's only open on the weekend. I want to try that place, too.

      1. re: lil mikey

I think the Cuban place got bad reviews on this board.
If you go further West past Hauser, aside from Bloom Cafe and La Maison du Pain there is C&J. I only got breakfast there and cannot vouch for lunch but it's always very good, and the portions are construction-worker-sized. You can eat outside, ditto for Bloom and LMDP.
Anyway, will try Wi Jammin soon. Thanks for the report!

    2. I eat there whenever I get a chance. Last time I was there I had a plate not a styrofoam container. The jerk chicken is also a killer, they use fresh chicken.
