I've had some meals in the past that Hart House Catering made, and they're quite good. At least, they were a few years ago.

I was at a wedding reception at the Gallery Room at Hart House about six years ago. It was quite good. Drinks and canapes before, very good dinner (I had a roasted stuffed supreme of chicken), and drinks and hanging out after. The service was excellent, overall quality of the food was very good, and it has a very pleasant clubby atmosphere. A complete success.

thanks. searching for a venue has been a real headache so far. so many places we almost committed to, but something always came up in the end.

we'll definitely have to look closer at this venue. i went to school there almost 10 yrs ago, so it would definitely have a nostalgic feel to it.

Full disclosure: (1) six years ago, so I don't know that things have changed; (2) bride was not "bridezilla", but had a very clear idea of what she wanted for the reception (she also made a number of concessions to the groom, so, as Dan Savage would say, she was GGG); (3) she was an employee of U of T, which, I *know*, did not afford her special treatment, but it means that she might have had an easier ride in terms of planning because she knew the ins-and-outs. All that said, it means that only in light of #3 would her position have been an advantage - you can have the same, just be honest and straightforward about what you want. Were I planning my own wedding, I would certainly consider it for myself.

            thanks again.
luckily for me, no sign of bridezilla so far, but it's only been a few months!
i've seen some good opinions on the food at the Hart House so i'm hoping it should be ok. to be honest, we're not looking for amazing food, but we just don't want it to be memorably bad. we almost booked another venue, but i spoke to a couple of friends and some members here on chowhound described the food as memorably bad. one friend of mine told me that no one at the table finished the main course because it was that bad. we were hoping it was an isolated incident because we really liked the venue, but then i read some other bad reviews here on chowhound.
there are other venues we are considering, but nothing really jumps out at us. i do like the Hart House though. i went there when i was a student and i think it would have a more laid back, intimate atmosphere for the wedding as opposed to some of restaurants/banquet halls we've seen.
            thanks again
