Needs recommendations for Friday dinner in/near Belleville, NJ

My youngest sister just got a big time job in Northern Jersey. She will be living in Belleville for about 1 week before I come down to visit her from Rhode Island. I am looking for local restaurants recommendations of all sorts. I have a feeling that she is going to be living there for a while, so I wouldn't mind a stockpile of suggestions.

I am looking for everything from casual to ethnic to white tablecloth dining in Belleville or a short drive away (especially considering that I had spend 3+ hours in the car already). Is there any must-go places?

  1. I'm not very familiar with Belleville, Kearny is nearby. It's been a long time since I've been there, but there is a place called the Thistle, it has great fish and chips. 87 Kearny Avenue, Kearny, NJ. Also there are great Spanish Portuguese places nearby in Newark.

There's really not much in Belleville per se, but you're very close to good food! The one rec I'd make in Belleville is Binh Duong for Vietnamese food, but this is a no-atmosphere, t-shirt and shorts kind of spot. Other options (and I know you can find posts about these places/towns on this board and others): In Montclair--everything from decent 'Q (Indigo Smoke) to fantastic, creative food (Blu, Fascino) to a great local place for breakfast, brunch, lunch or dinner (Raymond's). All are BYO to boot--a fabulous perk in NJ. Then there is Newark's Ironbound, which is full of some great Spanish, Portuguese and Brazilian food, Nutley has The Petite Cafe (haven't been in ages, but it's decent if not v. good), and, and, AND. Tons of restaurants in this little corner of northern NJ! Enjoy...

    2. Sorry to say, really not much in the way of eating in Belleville. There are probably some decent neighborhood italian restaurants, but that's about all. Best bet: Adjacent Nutley, Newark, (especially for the Ironbound section and Portugeuse food), and nearby Montclair, which is the restaurant destination for Essex County..

      1. It is worth the drive to Montclair where most of the good restaurants in Essex county are. In that town, you really have every type of food possible!

        1. Belleville is not known for their restaurants but here is two good ones right in Belleville.

For Portugese you must go to Solar Do Minho, 15 Cleveland St, Belleville, NJ, 973.844.0500. It is in a residental neighborhood right of the main drag which is Washington Avenue. The have the best rodizio around. The quality of the meats are way above many of the other places. Their seafood is wonderful too.

Another place that some friends recommended to us was Gino's Pizza & Luncheonette
545 Washington Ave, Belleville (973) 751-5848. It just a nice pizzeria, but they redecorated and have a cute dining room area and the food was really good and reasonable.

Also, there's a really good italian restaurant called Antonios Restaurant at 373 Franklin Ave, Belleville 973-751-7001. Right next door is a good italian bakery called Plaza Pastry Shop, 375 Franklin Avenue, Belleville 973-450-4104

There's a wonderful deli called Franks Deli, 311-313 Union Avenue, Belleville 973-759-3509 everything is fresh and delicious.

In nearby towns, I would recommend either the Lyndhurst diner at 540 Riverside Avenue in Lyndhurst or the Arlington diner at 1 River Road in North Arlington. Us Jersey people have to have a diner to go to - lol

Well, I guess there was more than I thought to go to in Belleville.

Tell your sister Welcome to New Jersey from all of us and to post any time she need any recommendations.

          1. We ate at the Belmont Tavern on Bloomfield Ave. in Belleville, just on the Newark border. Long-standing Italian restaurant. Very good food, good vibe, and nice staff.
