Davedigger Jul 31, 2007 12:17 PM

Does anyone know where I could buy one in Toronto, Hamilton or anywhere in between?

TIA!

...I wasn't quite sure what this was, a google search produced dozens of sites selling them, looks like a cool device...try Tap Phong on Spadina, Nicholau on Queen West or Dinetz on King East...maybe even William Sonoma but the price might be silly...good luck!

There are a lot of stores in little India on Gerrard selling a similar product for chapatis. Very cheap as I recall.

The tortilla presses I've seen in Kensington, Chinatown and on Gerrard have all been cheap aluminum. I've never come across a quality cast iron one in Toronto. Nella cucina on Bathurst might be a place to check.

After posting here and there a few times latley for peeps to go to Tap Phong for equipment, I got the itch myself...I just returned, they had heavy black cast iron ones, looked to be about the standard 8" type...$29.99, 3 on the shelf, up top on the right at the end of the cooking utensil aisle...looks like fun!

I have, somewhere in the kitchen, a Mexican tortilla press which I bought at some Latino store in manhattan made from heavy cast aluminium. Quite as satisfactory as cast iron.

Material's less important than some care and precision in assembly.Make sure the top and base seat squarely all round. These things aren't engineered and built by Porsche, so check 'em out wherever you buy.
