Unfamiliar w/ SoCal, where to eat in Pasadena?
Hello, I live in Atlanta. I'm going to be in Pasadena next weekend (Aug 10-11) with my brother and sister. We are in ages 38-42. I know of nothing in Pasadena except one trip many years ago to the Cheesecake Factory! Would love a casual, not too expensive (entrees under $20? is that possible?) kind of place. I love a pub kind of atmosphere, or a casual bistro. We also love any kind of ethnic (Thai and Chinese especially as I am seriously deprived of that out here in GA). Any suggestions for my group of out-of-towners would be appreciated! (We are all from the SF Bay Area, I just happen to currently live in ATL). Thank you!!!
Lunch options should include:
Pie 'n Burger - as the name suggests go for the pie and burgers. While some CH dismiss the place, if you are in Pasadena for lunch, it is not to be missed.
Fredos - Regarded by many as the best Philly Cheesesteak outside of Philly. I have never been to Philly, but I have been to Fredos and it is out of this world good. Again, a lunch spot only.
Will y'all have a car while you're out here? That'll expand your options a bit, of course.
For casual bistro in Pasadena, you could try Central Park (on Fair Oaks).
For decent (not great, but pretty good) Sichuan, there's Fu Shing on Colorado in east Pasadena - http://www.fushingrestaurant.com .
You might also want to check out Tibet Nepal House in Pasadena - not cuisine you're likely to find well-represented in Atlanta *grin* - http://www.tibetnepalhouse.com .
I know that other folks have suggested venturing down into the San Gabriel Valley, proper, for Chinese - I'd also suggest (if you're going to be making that drive - 10 to 15 minutes from Pasadena, at a stretch) checking out Golden Deli for Vietnamese and one of the many Vietnamese sandwich shops (here's a link to a review of the latter - the ones in Rosemead are close to Pasadena: http://www.chowhound.com/topics/423248 ).

Casual, not too expensive ... Mike and Anne's. www.mikeandannes.com
For Chinese, you'll have to go to San Gabriel Valley, which is just south of Pasadena. What kind of Chinese are you looking for? Asking for "Chinese" is really, really too broad.

Well, if you love good Chinese food, you must go to the cities just to the south and east, for some of the best Chinese food on the west coast. Pasadena is in the northwestern corner of the San Gabriel Valley, and SGV has become the new destination for serious Chinese food. I am no expert on this, but search on Chowhounds for "Chinese Food San Gabriel Valley", or any of the cities in the SGV but esp. Monterey Park, Alhambra, or Rowland Heights on the eastern side, and you will strike gold ! Hopefully some others who have some good rec.s can help. You might want to also post a new thread specific to Chinese or Thai food in the SGV.
As for Pasadena, it may be a bit more than your target price range, but consider the Parkway Grill, or Arroyo Chophouse (both owned by the same investors), two very nice but casual and well-run restaurants. There are lots of other good choices in Pasadena, have fun !
