I've developed an addiction to Aidell's chicken mango sausages. It's enough of an addiction that I'm wondering who's got the best prices.

The 12 oz packages range from $6 to $7 at various supermarkets and the Farmer's Market. Lunardi's sells them for $6.99/lb, which is the best price I've seen, but given how much I've been eating them, I'm wondering if there's anywhere around that sells them cheaper.

I think the reason I like these so much is the nice blend of flavors (especially the big chunks of mango) and the fact that, unlike most other sausages, they're not too spicy for me. Most sausages I've eaten tasted to me like combinations of tasteless meat, unchewable gristle and sharp bursts of painful peppers. Given my inabilities in the spice area, anyone have other sausages to recommend?

Sometimes they're on sale at Safeway or Andronico's. You can buy a bunch and freeze them in individual servings. Also check Costco.
Drewe's Meats on Church near 29th has some nice fresh as well as smoked chicken and fruit sausage (apricot and cherry, but not together) and Tower Market also has some nice smoked chicken and fruit sausages. I've usually buy one to try it to make sure I like it before buying a bunch.
I've found Whole Foods sausages to be not to my liking, but if you're feeling lazy, their blue cheese burger patties are a nice idea.

I agree about Whole Foods sausages. I've tried several an d havenow given up. The texture is weird and inconsistent, from oddly chunky to mealy, and I find them over-herbed.

There was a purveyor at the Oakland Friday market who had some really good kielbasa (to my non-Polish nor Midwestern taste), but it's been a while since my last visit, so perhaps someone else can comment. I think the company was from Pittsburgh? Pinole? An East Bay town...

Quality's gone downhill since Bruce Aidell sold the company to Del Monte Meat Co. They don't even make my favorite duck sausages any more.

Since the sausages are available in Costco stores and supermarkets all ove the country, discussion probably belongs on the General Topics board.

You might check whether they brought back the duck sausage. They did bring back 4-6 'flavours' that were downsized. Now only sold at farmers markets or commercially. It requires pre-order, and you have to go to farmers mkt (there is one in east bay, but not sure which, also ferry plaza saturday and marin on sunday). Anyway, check with Kathleen deWilbur @ 510-421-3329

That's the best Aidell's sausage, and also the hardest to find. They're excellent with a good mustard on a potato bun. I sometimes find them at Buffalo Whole Foods at Castro & 19th, but I can't remember if they're $6 or $7 there.

We've deleted the off topic responses.

Joy is asking two questions- where to find Aidell's locally for good prices, and recommendations for other brands to try.

We encourage people to continue to suggest local stores where Aidell's can be purchased (including Costco and other national chains with local outposts).

We also encourage people to suggest sausages that are locally made and only available locally.

However, a broader discussion of what Aidell's best flavors are, or suggestions of nationally available sausage brands that are comparable to Aidell's belongs on the General Topics board. Joy, please repost on that board if you're looking for that info, as we will be removing those posts here in order to keep this board focused on the chow that's unique to San Francisco.

I completely agree with you about the taste. I have seen them at Costco but finding them at markets is harder. Once I did find (alas in Washington state) a package of "breakfast" chicken mango sausages - they were smaller.

One place that I have consistently seen them is the Mountain View Farmers Market on Sundays in downtown MV. I'm not sure about the prices, but I'm sure the booth could direct you in finding the best place and you can pick up some fresh produce and flowers at the same time!

Just check the Redwood City Costco today and they did not have the chicken mango sausage but all the three pound packages were about 11 bucks.

I have found that not all Costcos have the same items. You could call ahead at your closeest Costco to see if they have it. If not then work your way out from you home base.

If you can acess to some of trade only stores they have a wider selection.
