Anyone try the lobster roll at ASSBar?

They were sold out tonight, so I couldn't try it. The menu advertises 1/2 lb. of lobster meat with lettuce on a grilled hot dog roll for $9.95.

  1. Did you try something else instead? I was there on Friday and got the Reuben. That's a very solid sandwich, and the corned beef they use is great. ASSBar is not a regular spot for me, at all, but when the parking gods leave a space right out front, you need to take it as a sign.

      I got the "falafel burger," which was just ok.

        I like the felafel sandwich at Brookline Lunch in Central Square. The version at Deluxe Town Diner ain't bad either. Both are surely a fraction of the price.

            There are so many better options in that part of Cambridge than this place if one was lucky enough to find a parking spot. ECG, Bukowski's, etc.

              ECG isn't open for lunch and I dislike Bukowski's. Different strokes, though.

                Our intention was to go to ECG, but we didn't get there early enough to avoid a wait, and we didn't have the time.

One seafood website says that the yield from a 1 lb lobster is about 2/3 cup and another says that it is about 1/4 to 1/3 of the weight of the total lobster; based on this to get 1/2 lb of meat, they would need at least 2-1 lb lobsters. I don't think they can sell a lobster roll with 1/2 lb of fresh Maine lobster meat for $9.95 unless they are losing money to bring in customers?

                The difference on the yield ratio could be from soft shell lobsters to hard shell lobsters.
                My guess is that they are using frozen lobster meat where 5 lbs. could cost them about $60.00.

                  exactly. that or cans. If you really think there is someone in the back cooking and shelling lobsters, i have a bridge to sell you. Most of the rolls at seafood shacks / restaurants along the Maine coast even come from frozen boxes. I know someone in the wholesale seafood biz, i will ask him what the current rate is.

              2. The ASSB was sold out of a featured offering? Shocking!!

                I went there three times before I was blessed enough for the Beef on Weck to be available. It was a letdown like most everything I have had there.

                There are enough great lobster rolls to be had without giving ASSB another shot.
