where to eat dinner near Hilton, san diego (mission valley)

I will be staying at the Hilton (901 Camino del Rio South). Any good suggestions for dinner. I like Asian, Mexican, sushi, vegetarian.... almost anything other than a steak house..... A unique neighborhood restaurant would be really appreciated.

Thanks

  1. Please tell us you have a car...

If you liek Fish and do not have a car, Kings Fish hous is not bad. Gordon Biersch has an awsome Hummus Salad with frilled chicken.

I short taxi ride away is Kensington Grill, a very good neighborhood resteraunt

    2. No we don't have a car.....

Oh. This is a challenge. There are no neighborhoods per se right there. Truly, the area is called "Hotel Circle"... Someone will have to help. There is a Mall (fashion Valley) within walking distance, and the trolley stops right there. Let me think...

Gosh. The only "local" I am thinking is local chains...

Onami is an all you can eat seafood in Fashion Valley..
There is a Gordon Biersch...but closer to the next mall east (longer walk)
Sammy's Pizza (woodfired and has other than Pizza; the mashed potatoes that come with the baked chicken are not only potato but also have veggies.... and the salads are huge and great)-actually if you take the trolley,it stops right behind it (just one stop)

Oh, seriously, this is like a pop quiz...

Thanks Cathy, I would be willing to take a bus or trolley to go to someplace good.

          1. re: Cathy

That would be a pretty long walk over to Fashion Valley. I think the trolley stop in Mission Valley by Sammy's would probably be closer, but even that's a schlep.

The Hilton is on the South side of I-8. In the immediate vicinity of the Hilton is a Japanese restaurant that I've never seen reviewed here and I can't even remember the name, but it is right next door to the Hilton and set back from the street towards the hill. Down the street (west) is a Bennihana's and a fairly new Thai place that's gotten a couple of good comments here.

The Hilton is pretty close to where Mission Center Rd. dead ends at Camino del Rio South, you can walk across the freeway to the shopping center with Borders and DSW. It's not a pretty walk as this is a HIGHLY trafficed and congested area, but there is a King's Fish House across the parking lot from DSW and it's pretty good. There's also a Chevy's and Gordon Biersch in this same area, but definitely skip those two. You can continue on down Mission Center Rd. past Camino de la Reina to Mimi's. Nothing fancy, expect to wait, but given what's in the area, it's not a terrible choice.

Without a car in Mission Valley is hard, really hard. Cabs in San Diego are not exactly inexpensive, but it may be worth your while to grab a cab and head up to Hillcrest and have the cabbie drop you at 5th adn University where you'll stumble over better choices just by walking around.

The name of the new Japanese restaurant (which replaced Hayama) next to the Hilton is Fuji, I think it's a teppan-table place. Anyone tried it? I never see very many cars parked there.

There's a Vietnamese place in the center with Hooter's, haven't been to it, but it's supposed to be good.

You could take the trolley to Old Town, Little India or Downtown/Gaslamp (and there are many threads on these topics), but like DD said, it's not a pleasant schlep to the trolley stop. You could probably pay for a car rental with one taxi ride...

              1. re: mikec

No- that Vietnamese place is way middle of the road and more expensive than most others.

I hate to re-use an old line, but I can't resist:

From a Chowhound standpoint, Hotel Circle is one of Dante's circles of hell.

Ed--hee hee hee! Every time someone is stuck in Mission Valley, I remember your line! :-)

          2. Kings fish, yes! Gordon Biersh also good.
down toward Qualcom satadium there is a Costco, Lowes, and Ikea. In that shopping center there is a Pizza place brewery. Great joint. good food and beers.
Google "The Mission Restuarant in SAn Diego" Find the one closest to you and get in there. REally should hit the one on University. City feel with Locs walking in. Kinda seedy area, but nice folks and safe. Breakfast is top notch. The one on Mission Blvd Mission Beach is very cool too.

The pizza place/brewery is called Oggi's Pizza and Brewing Company. Great pizza and beer.
