Fantastic Seascape Strawberries

pilinut Jul 28, 2007 10:03 PM

It may have been beginner's luck--first visit to the Berkeley market--but today I had the best strawberries I've tasted in over a decade. I spotted small, ugly berries, all of them thoroughly ripe. (In my experience, the darkest, ugliest berries are sweetest.) I asked for a taste. Sheer bliss: pure, fragrant strawberry candy. Nothing I've had, except for wild European strawberries, has ever come close. I bought three punnets, and six hours later, DH and I have gone through the lot, sans cream, sans sugar.

Do any of the HMB strawberry producers have Seascapes? I don't think I can go back to the Camarosas and the White Diamonds.

You're talking about Lucero? In my experience, their Seascapes are not consistently superior to Swanton's Chandlers. Which has more flavor varies from week to week and season to season.

I don't recall the name of the vendor but it definitely was not Lucero's. The vendor was directly across from Blue Bottle & Frog Hollow.

I don't know, but I had some pretty good berries at the Grand ave market yesterday too...Pretty much the last of the season
