St. Peter and Northfield, MN recs?

Does anyone have a recommendation for good, moderately priced chow near the Carleton/St. Olaf campus area in Northfield, or near Gustavus Adolphus in St. Peter?
Thank you all in advance.

  1. As a native of StP who returns every few weeks I can tell you that the choices are few. If you are looking for a quick and healthy lunch try the sandwich and hot food bar at the St. Peter Co-op. Everything is fresh and reasonably priced. They have about 10 tables for people to eat in. There is a Chinese place, Great Wall, at Minnesota and Broadway but this is a sweet & sour type of place with no atmosphere at all.

The place most people in town take visitors to is Whiskey River just across the Broadway Ave/Hwy. 99 bridge from downtown. It's a variety of American food and I can usually find something good there. They spend tons of money on birdfeeders and other critter feeding. You can get a table by the window and use the binoculars and bird guides that are hung on cords every few feet.

    1. I am a fan of Chapati in Northfield. Very good Indian food.

      1. I second the Chapati recommendation. If you're in N'fld for a quick meal, Hogan Bros has really great cheap sub sandwiches and ice cream, and the Rueb N' Stein has greasy, yummy burgers.
I haven't been to the Ole Store since the renovation but it's an institution and would probably be a nice place for breakfast (it's near St Olaf).
Pretty much everything in N'fld is on the cheaper end of things compared to the Twin Cities.

The Ole Store has been closed for a while.

        2. Enjoy the College visits!

There are a few other options in Northfield that you might want to know about and which have not yet been mentioned. There are many other food options in addition to the ones I am adding here, but nothing terribly exciting, in my opinion. These that I list are all places that I visit somewhat regularly (I work in Northfield, live in St. Paul, and come from the San Francisco Bay Area originally, and I am therefore constantly searching for good and interesting restaurants):

Kurry Kabab -- Northfield has two Indian restaurants, with Chapati and Kurry Kabab. Chapati is downtown in the Archer House Hotel building. Kurry Kabab is a little way south of town along Highway 3 (on the east side of the highway), and worth the drive. Both have large buffets for lunch and large menus for dinner. Both are good, with Kurry Kabab being a bit lighter, overall.

El Tequila -- A Mexican restaurant that is one of a few that are family-owned, and in various locations in the Northfield/Faribault/Farmington/Owatonna area. Good standard menu and a few less standard items. Located just south of town on the west side of Highway 3.

The James Gang Coffeehouse and The Hideaway -- Related to each other. They both have sandwiches, salads, panini, and a few other dishes. The Coffeehouse is located south on Highway 3, near Kurry Kabab. The Hideaway is on Division Street, downtown.

Bittersweet -- Also in the Archer House on Division Street, a nice cafe/bakery/lunch spot (soups, sandwiches, etc.).

Goodbye Blue Monday -- A great coffee house located on Division Street.

The Contented Cow -- A nice pub with decent lunch and dinner food. Definitely pub food, with a decent food menu and lots of beer on tap. They have a lovely patio out the back. It's hidden down a small alley on the west side of Division Street near the Archer House.

          1. I'm a big fan of Patrick's in St. Peter. They have some pretty good bar food. Burgers, wraps...etc. Otherwise... depending on where you're from, if you haven't had Godfather's pizza, there is one in St. Peter.

Thank you all for your suggestions. The admissions folks at Gustavus Adolphus provided us with a meal ticket for the prospective students, so we just ended up eating in the cafeteria there. They told us the cafeteria food was ranked 6th in the wasn't bad, but perhaps I would have loved it more when I was 18. Amusingly enough, when we toured St Olaf the next day the tour guide said their food is ranked 5th in the nation. They use the same caterer as the Guthrie (Bon Appetit) and buy a lot of local produce. We heard no claims about food ranking at Carleton.

We tried to go to Chapati but we arrived around 4 pm and they were closed until 5, so we went to Hogan Brothers instead for sandwiches and ice cream. The hot hoagie I had was very tasty, and I was pleased that they had Sprecher's root beer on tap.
It was just what we needed at the time, so martaru, thank you for suggesting it.
