Thanks for all the info and suggestions from previous posters! This is how we spent our 3 days on BI:

Eli’s for dinner – no reservations and a small room..
Calamari appetizer – very good
Tuna (rare) cooked well but there was too much soy sauce marinade in the bottom of the plate making the veggies and noodles mushy and unappetizing…
Sausage and penne dinner– excellent

Aldo’s – breakfast came with our room, nothing great, skip it and try something else

Bethany’s – lunch at the airport
Hot dogs and kraut – excellent and friendly local place

Harry’s – dinner BYO, plastic utensils, very casual but interesting menu
Started with dinner salad with roasted red pepper ranch– very good
Jerk scallops – excellent
Monk fish – sides good (pineapple salsa, ginger/soy slaw), but the fish was just so so…kind of rubbery and tasteless. The rice that comes on the side is plain old white rice, it needs some help as well…but this place has potential and a nice view.

Oar – lunch
Shrimp tacos very good
Chicken Caesar very good

Froozies - smoothie
Peach, pineapple, strawberry #6? – Very good, would like to try them for lunch hummus/falafel, etc…

Finn’s – dinner – nice view but overpriced for the food…
Calm chowder – so so
Oysters – so so, don’t waste the money on them there
Dinner salad – ok
Baked stuffed lobster 1 ½ lb – good
Lobster sauté – very good

Payne’s –
Had sinkers for breakfast after a bike ride out from town – excellent (had plain and sugared) they have cinnamon too.

Lunch at the dock right where you get off from the ferry (forget the name)… cash only
Fried clam roll (with bellies) – very good but small portion
Hot lobster roll – excellent
Hot dog – ok if you’re really hungry

On Wednesday there is a farmer's market from 9-11 at Mansies parking lot - I had heard great things about the honey so that's where I was able to but some as they don't have a store. There is also a woman there who sells beautiful baked goods. We had just had sinkers so wasn't that hungry, but by the time I decided to get in line it was 1/2 way down the parking lot. Next time I am in town I want to try her breads and scones, they all look delicious, and from the line, I could tell they were well worth the wait!!

Geminigirl, kudos to you for getting back to us all. There have been several requests lately for Block Island recommendations and I think you have been the only one to actually report back.

That honey you got is Littlefield Bee Farm honey. It's an iconic food item for any chowhounder to take home! It was actually featured on the David Letterman show once years ago. It's also available at the Block Island Depot and at various gift stores around town.

Too bad you didn't get in line for the "scone lady" as she is called around here. She also sells mixes for them.....

Good to know the Oar is still delivering a great lunch.

If the place you had the clam bellies was next to a Ben and Jerry's, it's the Water St. Cafe. Love their fried bellies!

so what's the deal with the "scone lady" are her scones as good as they looked?? I have been having a craving for scones ever since....I imagine her cooking all week at home (in a big beautiful ocean front BI home of course) and then coming to the market to sell - ahh, my dream job!

The "Scone lady's" real name is Pat Doyle. She and her husband Tom bought a used Blodgett oven years ago that they keep in their backyard. Each Wednesday and Saturday (the days of the BI Farmer's Market) they get up at 5 am and bake about 60 loaves of bread and 300 to 400 scones. They usually sell out by 10 am. I haven't actually tried them but I hear they are very good.
