Madrid - Where to buy Butifarra negra o blanca & French Wine

  • 4

Can anyone tell me where I can buy excellent quality Butifarra negra o blanca (Barcelona style) in Madrid. I need to buy some to take to a friend in Southern Spain the following day, so also need them to keep well - ice pack, vacuum packed etc.
If anyone knows a fantastic delicatessen near Calle Prado, that sells high quality ones, as well as a wine shop nearby with great quality Spanish wines (as well as some Pouilly Fuisse or Pouilly Fume from France for my friends who I will be visiting in South Eastern Spain, after Madrid, who wants some for their birthday. Since I am coming direct to Spain from the Far East, it is difficult for me to find.

  1. You should be able to get the butifarra in the Mercado Antón Martín, which is near c/Prado. I'd try La Leonesa on c/Santa Isabel. (If I go by that way this week, I'll check for you.) Remember the hours are M-Sat 9:30ish-2:00 and M-F 5:00ish-8:00. You might contact the wine store Lavinia ahead of time to see if they can get you the French wine. If so, I would imagine that they could deliver it to your hotel:

Also for butifarra, we go a place in the Mercado de la Cebada in La Latina. We like the meat stall that is on the lower level left side (as you are coming down the big stairs in the front), second row from the front on the right side. The trouble is that in August things get kind of sleepy and a lot of stalls close, but if I remember correctly, this stall stays open most of the month. If you are in La Latina during business hours, you might try La Exquisita for a small, but interesting selection of Spanish wines (across from Plaza San Andrés in between c/Humilladero and c/Tabernillas).

Many thanks Butterfly. Can you tell me the location of the lavinia store, since I could not work it out on the website. Can't wait to try the butiffarra again, I have tried before and I think my friend will like also.

Here's the info on their Madrid store:

          Lavinia
calle José Ortega y Gasset 16
          Tel: 91 426 06 04
          Hours: 10:00 - 21:00
          Email: clientes@lavinia.es

I think you should be able to find someone there who can respond in English.

If you get caught shopping off-hours, you should also be able to get butifarra and wine (though I'm not sure about the French ones) at an El Corte Inglés supermarket--both the one at Preciados and Callao have supermarkets in the basement. The Preciados location also has a "Club de Gourmet" store in the basement.
