Never been, going on Sunday. Where should I go for lunch/dinner? Name any cuisine...I'm open to all flavors.

I like La Fuente on Figueroa and Ave 56 they have great authentic Mexican food. I like to get their menudo during the weekends. Another favorite is their whole fried red snapper called Mojjara? It comes with rice, beans, and tortillas. Their burritos are also tasty. My favorite is their steak burrito with sauteed peppers and onions.

I like to order the carne asada burrito with green sauce. I have not had their mojarra, yet. I also like their shrimp dishes and the seafood quesadilla.

Concur w/both on La Fuente....hands down the best Mexican restaurant in HP.....
For ceviche try Mariscos Sinaloa on York near Ave. 56..it's an old Taco Bell...don't try the shrimp cocktail though.
For supercheap and pretty good Italian try Follliero's on Figueroa & Ave. 56.
For shrimp cocktail and ceviche try the blue truck that parks at Sycamore Park..Just South of Ave. 50 on Figueroa....forgot the name.....always a line for good reason.
For margaritas and guacamole go to Villa Sombrero on York 2 blocks West of Figueroa @ Branch St..
Also go to Galco's on York & Ave. 57 to check out their extensive soda and beer offerings.
For a drink go to Johnny's @ 5006 York. Best bar in HP.

Mariscos Sinaloa is the place across from Big Lots? If so, I agree with the ceviche.

There are many Mexican restaurants that serve up great food in Highland Park. Personally, I like La Fuente. If you don't mind venturing a couple of miles out to Eagle Rock, you will have more of a variety to choose from. Try Cafe Beaujolais on Eagle Rock Blvd for dinner. For lunch, head over to Oinksters for burger, fries, and ube shake. If you want something healthier for lunch, head over to fatty's. They serve vegetarian food, but any thing on the menu can be made vegan. I haven't been to Larkins yet, but I have heard great things.

BYOB AND HAVE A GREAT TIME!

I just got a report from a friend of mine who went there earlier in the week. She said the plates were small dishes, and tasty, but at high prices. Her and her partner had a couple of small plates, a couple drinks each (friend drinks non-alcoholic beer) and the tab was around $70. I hope the neighborhood can sustain them...

Grew up in Highland Park so you'll be safe with these options....My Taco on York between Avenue 64 and Figueroa, El Huarache Azteca #1 at 5225 York Blvd. The newer places are pretty good too, like the York at Ave 50 and York and Martys on York and 51. HP wont be mistaken for a foodie's haven anytime soon, but you can still find some tasty meals here.

What is the barbacoa at El Huarache. It seems like that is their specialty.

Their barbacoa is lamb, not goat, stewed in spices then served with the consomne (basically the water it was cooked in). I ate this a few weeks ago, split the special of a couple lbs of meat, tortillas, 2 aguas and 2 consomee. The broth is really delicious and the meat was super, cooked until it is tender and terrific flavor none of that chivo gaminess that I dislike (had barbacoa at Taurino last night and it was not to my taste but that might be the goat-aversion thing, not sure)

Nothing fancy at Huarache Azteca but the seasoning was better than similar stuff I ate in people's homes in D.F.
