Traveling I-59 to New Orleans from Birmingham. Any suggestions for a good lunch at a non-chain restaurant in the area of Meridian, MS?

I haven't been there in 20 years, but Weidman's on 22nd Ave. used to be good- if nothing else it is certainly nostalgic! Also a place called San Marcos was great at one time- it might still be!

My wife used to live in Jackson and has fond memories of Weidmann's. However, the restaurant has gone through noticeable changes in the past few years (possibly new ownership?) and the menu is attempting to be more upscale.

Over Christmas, we went through downtown Meridan expecting to eat at Weidmann's (and not knowing that things have changed). We were both disappointed at the prospects of Weidmann's -- Carolyn because it was a far cry from what she remembered, and me because it looked like a quick way to blow $60 for no good reason. Oh, and the staff wasn't exactly full of warm fuzzies.

We didn't end up going, so I can't speak to the actual meal...just that the menu was very different than what it had been for so long. I'd be interested in hearing what others say about Weidmann's, and Meridan in general. We ended up leaving town with empty stomachs.

(Downtown Meridan is an amazing place, just in its sheer architecture and history. If I had a gazillion dollars, I'd speculate on the future of downtown Meridan. Something's going to happen there.)
