Please help my friend in Statesboro/Savannah

A friend just moved to Statesboro. Her email says "there is a Bilo and a Walmart, neither are nice"

Can anyone help with suggestions where to source good food in the Statesboro area? Failing that, where are the best places to shop in Savannah? She's not a serious foodie, but she's committed to organic. Stores, farmer's markets, farms, dairy, etc.

I appreciate your help. It would suck to be in a new town without friends or family AND without anything good to eat !

Statesboro has a Farmer's Market the first and third Saturdays of each month of the summer, starting this weekend. Farmers will set up in the parking lot of the Sea Island Bank's downtown location. The market runs from 9am to 2pm.

The market was open one weekend in April and one in May and offered a wide variety of organic produce freshly picked that morning.

Along with organic fruits and vegetables, there are yard plants for sale, as well as locally made cheeses (some made from raw milk), handmade soaps, and fresh baked breads.

I've shopped there in April and May and plan to go every 1st and 3rd Saturday for the rest of the summer. All the produce has been delicious and very reasonable.

    Hope this helps!

There is a Saturday morning organic farmers market at the Starland district in Savannah, around Bull and 42nd. It's small and also includes vendors of other wares. Your friend might meet some like-minded people there.
Afterward they can go up Bull St to the bottom of Forsyth Park and stop in at Brighter Day for lots more organic produce, health foods etc. Get a cup of coffee at Sentient Bean next door.

This is the norm in practically all of the south. I do a lot of on-line ordering, learn recipes that adapt to local produce, have ferreted out local farmers (organic, free range eggs/poultry, butter, cheeses and country hams) and make food forays to Charleston and Atlanta.

I advise she get used to BiLo. There are seasonal road side stands around Statesboro that might be okay for tomatoes, okra, corn, peaches and blueberries. Statesboro is not high on Quality of Life, except there is a great golf course there and it offers the only fine dining option in town. It's pretty good, but private.

Most farms in that part of Georgia are growing commodity type crops.

Savannah has a Fresh Market. The Farmers market around Savannah is in Garden city, it is nothing to make a special trip to.

Tell them to go to Vandy's best cue in south Ga. Been making it for over 50 yrs in an old block building in downtown. Tell them to also get friendly wlth the local farmers, there can be some great fresh produce, just need to know where the good patches are. Used to also be a large marlet of illicit mushrooms in the area. for any John Prine Fans looking for that illegal smile.

Vandy's is very good, but I suspect someone committed to Organic is not looking for that

                The mushrooms are organic, right?

If you are looking for some good resturants I would suggest Christopher's at Midtown market, Chops downtown on west main, The Mill House on the Bypass or Shogun's for a passable sushi bar.
