Belmont & Sheffield, not bar food

ElaineS Jul 25, 2007 03:29 PM

Anyone have any suggestions for a restaurant in the Belmont/Sheffield area that does not specialize in bar food. My spouse is a vegetarian and I am a dieter. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Although it started as a bar, Schuba's opened Harmony Grill next door and the food is great! It is on the corner of Belmont and Southport, so a little West of Sheffield. The service can be blah, but they have great food and a nice outside area. Don't miss the mac and cheese, it is fabulous as well as the sweet potato fries!

There are also basic options on Sheffield and Belmont like Leona's, Clarke's, Ann Sathers, and Pizza Capri, but they are below average

Harmony Grill is a great idea. We've enjoyed it on previous visits.
      Thanks!

For an informal meal Panes Bread Cafe, S of Belmont on Sheffield, has excellent soup and sandwiches. There are a variety of veggie options.

Panes was pretty lousy the one time I was there. Definitely wouldn't warrant a return visit given the other options in that area.

I'll second the suggestions of Harmony Grill.

PS Bankok, Raw Bar, Tuscany, Pompei, Coobah (yes, it's a bar but it's pretty cool)

          Harmony Grill is nothing special.

If you like Indian food, Standard India on Belmont offers a number of vegetarian options on it's buffet- also a great Tandoori chicken- all for about $10-

On a budget, Sinbad's is a great option for vegetarians as well- great Tabouli and Sinbad Salad, and nicely seasoned falafel - For the meat eater, go for the Kifta Kabob sandwich or Chicken Shawarma- 2 people could eat a filling meal here for about $10

Both are just east of the El Station between Sheffield and Clark on Belmont

hooray, vegetarian wife! there's a lot of vegetarian options in that area, as we all know gay men love tofu.
i have to throw in a recommendation for the chicago diner (http://www.menuism.com/restaurants/ba...) which is at halsted & roscoe (2-3 blocks away from belmont & sheffield, if you're not familiar with the area). it's a great vegetarian diner that's absolutely beloved in the veggie community. also, since you're a dieter, i can't recommend the thunder salad enough - it comes loaded with chickpeas, nuts, and avacado. with some garlic dressing? it's perfect. i worked at the diner for a long time, and i ate the thunder salad almost every day. i don't think there's any higher praise.

Mama Desta's Red Sea on Clark N of Belmont is friendly, good Ethiopian, with several vegetarian options. Most of the Asian restaurants in walking distance are low quality. Standard India is buffet, so depends on freshness. Lunchtime seems to be higher quality.
