I'm going to be taking a week off from work and bum around. I wanted to try some of the places that I don't get to try b/c I work in Old Town. So this is what I'm thinking, but I think I may be missing some so any help would be appreciated!

CF Folks
Breadline
Oohs and Aahs

And if you could give me any tips on best days/times, etc. that would be great.

Thanks!

Some of the BEST carry-outs in the city are roughly in the same area. Get a friend or two and try a couple or all at once for a tasting picnic:
1) Horace and Dickie's - some of the best fried fish you'll ever put in your mouth. They also have good basic desserts but don't venture off the fish. Choices are white or "whole wheat" bread. Get extra hot and tartar sauce.
2) Philadelphia Water Ice Factory - Great Philly cheesesteaks made on Amoroso rolls that they bring down from Philadelphia. The lemon water ice is terrific!
3) Deli City - fresh Kosher style meats on incredibly generous sandwiches like you rarely see anymore - not those prissy downtown sammies.
4) Cluck-U - you could throw in some spicy, crispy wings from Cluck-U to eat in the car while you're rounding up all the other food.

Take all the goodies for a picnic to the nearby Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens to see the Lotus blooming their hearts out - right now! - but not for long. Unbelievable once a year show. If you miss that, there's always the National Arboretum - great place to spread out your picnic to enjoy some of the best Chow in Washington.

On your way home, stop in at Sidamo, an Ethiopian coffee house on H Street, NE. The lovely Ethiopian couple who own the shop roast and brew the excellent coffee you can enjoy there.

Deli City is an excellent suggestion. Marty L. pointed me toward a corned beef/pastrami combo. The best of both worlds.

Go to Breadline on a Friday, order the BBQ on a ciabatta. You have to ask for it on a ciabatta. I think cf folks has their crabcake everyday, but it's definitely there on Mondays. At Oohs and Aahs get the greens and the rice with gravy as your sides, and go for the lemon pepper wings or the shrimp. Get there right when they open, though they sometimes open 15 minutes or so late.

Why not make a pilgrimmage up to Rockville for the small plates at Joe's Noodle House? Wontons in red hot sauce, fried peanuts with baby smelt, rice cakes with ground pork, pickled vegetables. Very inexpensive. Or just get the infamous H20 (fish and vegetables in a bowl of red sauce) and be prepared to sweat. You can take it.

I've seen Cluck-U mentioned a few times recently. Is this the same as the one in College Park? If so, did they get better? I tried that location a few years ago and it left a lot to be desired.

Either way, can you describe them more, and compare with some other wings in the area? fwiw, for hot wings, Bungalow Billiards and their 3 mile island sauce are pretty solid wings - imo. Buffalo wing factory is what I consider a baseline - but that's still leaving a lot of room for improvement.

Friends and I call Cluck U "Suck U." It is a chain, the service at every location I have ever been to has been uniformly bad, and the food is no better than chicken / wings you can get just about anywhere else, IMO.

You should certainly check out CF Folks. You can get their daily special at www.cffolksrestaurant.com.

But if their crab cake sandwich is on the menu...order that for sure!!! They are open 11:45-2:30pm Monday-Friday.

In terms of their specials I really love their chicken with olives that they serve sometimes on Fridays. The meat is super tender and delicious.

I am lucky enough to work right around the corner from breadline, everything is so good I never know what to get. One of my favorites is their italian sausage on Tue I believe. But mmm it really is so good. I try not to eat it for lunch too often because I normally pack something healthy, but really soooo good. I liked their stuffed bread and specials more than some of their normal sandwiches for the bread quality alone.

Thanks everyone! Those H street places, especially Horace and Dickies, look great. I think I will try that one day and CF Folks and Breadline other days.

I'll report back!

I'd hit up the Greek Deli on 19th, south of M. There's no seating, so you'll have to go around the corner to the park at M and CT to eat, but it's worth it. The food is so damn good.

Port of Piraeus market on 13th and I is a great spot. The gyros never disappoint, and their daily specials such as stuffed tomatoes are a welcome change from the everyday sandwich order. Also, i'm not sure about the other locations, but this one is always sparkling clean.
