Hilton Head Help
Going to Hilton Head in a few weeks with a large group of people. The plan is to cook more than eat out. So, I am looking for the best places to shop for food. Fruit & Veggies (farmers market if possible), a butcher and a place for fish/shellfish. Woulds like to stay away from big supermarkets. All ideas are appreciated.
captain's seafood used to have a great seafood market but i don't know if they do since they moved to the coligny area. otherwise i'm not much help with this one.
My parents have lived on the island for 12 years, Good farm stand is Mr. Grant on Squire Pope Road, North End of the Island, just past Hudsons, before Bermuda Point. It is on the left with an American Flag near the drive. He is now open seven days a week from 9 to 5. My mom buys all her produce from him. On the weekends his sister is there and she sells BBQ that is very good. For fresh seafood check out Benny Hudsons (not the restaurant) also on Squire Pope Road, Very Fresh shrimp he has boats that go out every morning. As far as a butcher you may not have much luck. There is a Fresh Market (mid island) and that maybe the closet you come to anything looking like a butcher.
If you don't mind going "off island" to Bluffton, there is a real butcher on SC 46 called Scott's Market. Just down the road a bit, at the end of Wharf Street is the Bluffton Oyster Factory that has very, very fresh fish at reasonable prices (they do have more than oysters!) The good part of that is that you'll have a chance to see Bluffton (great little galleries, etc) The Oyster Factory sits on the May River and has a beautiful view - really - you could sit there all day! For Scotts - find the old Piggly Wiggly on 46 and look across the street. Scotts is in the corner of the little row of shops - the Sippin Cow Cafe is on the other end and the Squat & Gobble (no, I'm not kidding) is across the street.
