Great Thai in Phoenix?

Any recommendations for great thai restaurants? I would prefer one in the NE valley (tatum/101), but am definitely willing to travel for a great restaurant.

I like Malee's in "Old Town" Scottsdale. I've never been to the Desert Ridge location. There is a nice list of Thai places in this thread:

Last time I went to Malee's they tried to sell me some TEMPURA SHRIMPS WITH EXOTIC SPICES. Nice if you are a businessman from Milwaukee.

I find the majority of Thai joints in Phoenix to be a clumsy fusion of Chinese/Pacific/Thai served with a slice of orange.

For the real deal (yes I have street credibility here, having spent lots of time in the north of Thailand) try Krua Thai. Nothing pretentious about the place. Simple provincial Thai cuisine served just like Mom's. Give the red curry a try. The larb is always spot on. The old stand by of mango with stick rice always is a treat.

Put aside your expectations and try some original Thai cuisine. Ask for it "pet pet" and be prepared to order a sugary Pepsi to cool your tongue.

      2. I think Swaddee Thai is one of the best Thai restaurants in the Valley. I've also heard good things about Osha Thai but haven't tried it yet.

Swaddee is amazing. I also like Mint Thai Cafe (in Gilbert) and Siamese Cat (in Tempe off the 101 and Baseline).

        2. Malee's is very trendy and has a great atmosphere but as far as Thai food ,it's at the bottom of my list.I have eaten at both locations several times and always wonder why I gave it another try. It's what China Bistro is to Chinese food, almost!
My top picks for "real" Thai food are #1 Chanpen Thai, 51st. Ave. and Thunderbird
#2 Line Thai, 99th. Ave and Bell #3 Thai Lhana, 37th .St. and Indian School
Posters here have complained about the service at Thai Lhana but I have always had good service there.I think they fall down during rush times.

I will agree with twodogs' ranking here except I would put Swaddee Thai at the top and bump the others down one notch. With the caveat that I only haunted the Chandler location, I don't know about Scottsdale. You can describe dishes that you had in Thailand but your stupid brain refuses to remember what they were called, and they will make them for you just as hot as you'd like it, perfectly fresh and flavorful.

And then maybe I would give Wild Thaiger and Thai Lahna a tied ranking.

Is that Thaifoon place still in Scottsdale, has anyone been? Outside of it obviously being a scene-y place is the food decent?

            1. re: themis

Thaifoon is average....I honestly don't know how they make it.
The food is bland for thai food and uninspiring. It never seems to be busy.....
They do a great Happy Hour special...1/2 price appetizers and $5 drinks.....
              otherwise I wouldn't bother...

            3. Our standbys are Osha Thai Cafe and Chanpen. I LOVE Osha's Tom Kha soup. They have really good peanut sauce for their satay as well. Most of the items I've tried I would definitely get again. The only thing I'm not keen on is their pad thai, but pad thai is a very personal preference. Chanpen also has great satay with a spicier peanut sauce. My g/f is in love with their garlic chicken, since it comes with a large amount of crunchy roasted garlic chips on top.
We are also fans of Thai Pan at Miller and Pinnacle Peak in N Scottsdale. Awesome lettuce wraps and the food comes out very fast, but it's always good.

I have to 2nd Swadee in Scottsdale.....one of our favorites.

I tried MIKE THAI in Mesa last week for lunch, the Panang Curry was fabulous!

We've been to Shanghai Palace and are in the underwhelmed crowd. A lot of our appetizers had an institutional look and taste, which was disappointing.

Thank you for your recommendations. I've heard some friends talk about Thai Lana (I think it's on Shea). Is that any good?

                    1. re: chaiwalla

The only thing, with which I am familiar, with a similar name, is Thai Lahna. It's in the strip mall on the NW corner of 38th St and Indian School Road in Phoenix. I sure I'm thinking of the same place, commented on by twodogs above, with the alternate spelling.

              2. Krua Thai (tiny place in North Phoenix) is wonderful. I am very fortunate to live so close.

Do you have an address or general location for Krua Thai?

Thanks, Pete Tillman, always on the lookout for good No.PHX cuisine

                  1. re: Tillman

SE corner of Bell Rd and 16th Street. It's hard to see. Look for the Taste of India restaurant and it's in the same plaza. It's a hole in the wall place. Very small, but I really enjoyed my panang the one time I went for lunch.

                2. Sala Thai on 32nd Street is very good. Swaddee in Scottsdale is good, also.
