Red Pearl Kitchen, yes or no?

  • 7

A friend has suggested dinner at Red Pearl Kitchen for Saturday night. Neither of us have ever been. From past posts I've read, it seems the chatter about this place is "it's ok" at best.
My friend is interested in ambience over food (someplace dark, a little hip), I'm far more interested in the food. What do you all think? Is there some place else I should suggest to him (we're looking to stay near Hollywood or W Hollywood), or am I being overly critical of this place? Has anyone been recently?
Thank you all

  1. I think you both will enjoy the place more than you might have thought, and both will get fair satisfaction - it is hip enough, yet not over the top by any means, and definitely good enough, yet not great either. And it is dark with tangerine colored booths, and nice bar scene.
As to a rating, maybe OK+ to good would be my score, based on your parameters.

Precisely!!! I'd say go for it!!!

    2. RPK: my vote is NO.

imo BLD has what you are both looking for: hip, dark(ish) ambiance with good to excellent food. Also, service has been MUCH better at BLD in recent months.

      1. no way. expensive, mediocre at best and the service totally lacks. yes, the room s is awesome and dark and hip, but that's the only good thing i can say about the place.

I second this opinion. Drinks will break your bank. Food won't kill you. Some of it (if they haven't run out) is actually tasty but overall a pricey, mediocre experience.

        2. I agree that you will enjoy, for Chinese food, this is one of my favorites.

          1. If you're looking for someplace dark and a little hip, there's also Citizen Smith and Velvet Margarita, both next door to each other on Cahuenga. They're both good for celeb spotting, too, if your friend is interested, and while I haven't eaten at Velvet Margarita, the drinks are pretty good.
