Huntington St. Cafe in Shelton, CT

It's the surprises that make it fun to search for good eats.

About six weeks ago, I happened to be in Shelton for the first time ever in the early morning hours, and was feeling a little hungry. So I walked into Huntington Street Cafe, which is--you guessed it--on Huntington Street. From the outside, it appeared to be a run-of-the-mill coffee place, so I expected the usual java-accompanying offerings: scones whose mass and consistency make them more appropriate for use as doorstops rather than breakfast.

But instead they had a wide selection of breakfast sandwiches and wraps on their regular menu. And even a special wrap: egg, cheddar, bacon, avocado, and home fries. I ordered the special and a tall cup o' joe.

Here was the surprise: the wrap was FLAWLESS. Just the right amount of egg, not too much cheese, the avocado was very very fresh, and super green, like you'd get with sushi. The bacon was cooked to perfection, not black and crunchy, and not soft and rubbery, but *just right*. The home fries in the wrap added a special touch. The whole thing just melted in my mouth. It was truly fantastic. I was deeply, deeply saddened when it was over.

I love sandwiches. I love breakfast sandwiches. I eat them constantly. And I don't know what it was, but this one was in my top five sandwiches ever. Breakfast or otherwise. (I know, I know, wraps aren't sandwiches) I wanted to meet the person who made it. I wanted to see for myself the hands that put the wrap together. I wanted to tell the person, "You did a marvelous thing here today."

I'd never been to Huntington St. Cafe before. I haven't been able to get back there since then. And this was a special, so I don't even know whether their regular menu stuff is any good. Maybe it was a fluke.

Has anyone else been to this place?

  1. There is also a very good Italian restaurant called Portobellos just down the street on the same side but in the back of one of the buildings. I have been there a few times and have enjoyed the food. I have not been too Huntington St Cafe since they were Rhapsody in Brew. It was good then also.

I actually live across the street from the owners of the Huntington St Cafe and have had their food on several occasions. The sandwiches are always perfect and there is a wider selection than before when it was Rhapsody. Definate upgrade!
