Brookline, Breakfast

Hi All:

I am new to the board. Can you suggest a nice place to have breakfast in the Brookline area on a weekday besides Zaftig's?

Thanks all in advance.

  1. Well, for a diner-like breakfast (complete with surly waitresses), there's the Busy Bee.

They aren't surly! But the owner yells alot. And the service is great. Be sure to specify how you want your food done as they tend to undercook.

I kid, I kid, ginnyhw! I enjoy them, much as I do the waitresses at Regina's.

We don't want to scare off vanillaknit, do we? Have you been to Martin's Coffee Shop recently? I heard it had changed hands again. How does it stck up against Family Restaurant for breakfast?

I went to Martin's about a month ago and found it to be very bland. Everything was greasy as hell and lacked flavor. I sat at the counter so I was able to watch the grill. The chocolate chip pancakes seemed to be a popular item and probably accounted for 70% of their orders that morning. I didn't find the prices to be all that cheap for what they serve. Definitely on the higher side. I'll just drive over to Watertown if I'm looking for a good diner breakfast experience.

Zaftigs is real hit or miss and their food doesn't justify waiting 30-40 minutes in line for. The best thing there is probably their banana stuffed french toast.

I always forget that the Family Restaurant does breakfast. I'm curious how it is because I'm a fan of their lunch and dinner menu.

We were there a few weeks ago, and the inside has been all renovated (painted and new backsplashes, etc., in the kitchen), but the food and menu seem to be about the same as usual. Actually, come to think of it, I was totally disappointed in my "Hungarian" omelet, which was beyond bland. I blamed it on my choice, I hope it's not a sign that things are going downhill?

I love Brookline Family Restaurant morning, noon, or night, but have always liked Martin's for a greasy spoon breakfast option with a more dinerish feel.

You gotta love the Busy Bee. It hasn't changed a bit in 30 years. I love the yelling owners and the waitresses that call you "hon." I've never had anything undercooked except bacon once or twice.

Larry Lucchino was eating there last time I went.

        2. Family Restaurant for sure; I love that place. Some unusual and savory dining options, sunny location, brisk service but not pushy...Now when you say "nice" do you mean it has to be authentic, or filling, or have pleasant ambience, or what? Because I wonder if the little crepe place next to the Coolidge Corner Theatre would count. Also you can get alotta breakfast up by Cleveland Circle at the Eagle--it ain't pretty but it's pretty tasty.

          1. i seem to remember the washington square tavern doing brunch sometimes (not sure if that is current info, though)... also the fireplace serves weekend brunch. i concur with all the votes for the family restaurant. used to go there quite a bit back when it was in washington sq (the spot now taken by the fireplace).

            1. Eastern Standard. Not Brookline, but close enough!
