Lunch Plate from Curry Corner Takeaway, Hayward

Cruising along this stretch of Mission last week, I finally was in Curry Corner's neighborhood at the right time to pick up some lunch. A little before noon, it wasn't open yet, but the proprietress held up five fingers to signal me to return in five minutes. I stepped into the grocery store next door, and soon the owner of that business relayed her message to me that she was open for business.

Early in the day, the choices were limited. No roti, just rice. But no matter, the smells wafting out each pot lid she lifted and I had a little of each. Curry chicken, eggplant and spinach braised in coconut milk, and the skimmed-off brothy part of the pot of dal. Each was well-spiced and I needed the starch and a sugary drink to quell the heat.

This $5 lunch plate was delectable and satisfying. It was also more than I could eat in a sitting.

  1. I have been to curry corner about 4 times and every time I go the food is not just "well seasoned" but over seasoned. The nice lady behind the counter used to be a nutritionist so it is very strange that the food is so salty. Anyone else share this opinion?

Well, I'm pretty biased because I love Curry Corner. Most Indian food to me is one dimensional and boring. That being said, while there is a intense use of spice at Curry Corner, salt has never been one that struck me as standing out. I don't salt my food, so I'm pretty sensative to over salted food when eaating out. Is it the Ghee? There's a lot of that used, so maybe that?

These dishes didn't taste salty to me. They were plenty spicy. Ghee is usually made with unsalted butter, so don't think that would be the source of too much salt. I had the advantage of trying these dishes when just completed as the first customer of the day. Maybe they get saltier as they cook down over the course the day.

strange, thanks for the second, and third opinions. must just be me.

    2. just back from my first visit and wow...loved it. The fish was perfectly fried, crispy on the outside, moist inside, nicely seasoned with the perfect amount of heat, not oily at all. The black eyed peas, egg curry and roti were delicious too. I'll definitely go back when in the neighborhood.
