Floridian Hounds -

Some colleagues and I from the DC area will be in Naples tomorrow and Friday. A short visit, but we want to see what places we should consider checking out. Any type of food and price level welcomed - the uniquer the better. We're staying at the Naples Grand Resort & Gold Club.

Thanks!

Another recent Naples thread mentions Baleen for fine waterfront dining (it's part of La Playa hotel in North Naples)...fresh fish & seafood is excellent at Nemo's. Grouper & Chips is very casual and supposed to still be very good but haven't been there lately.

heh,heh...ramshackle??? In NAPLES??? Oh, they would never stand for it...some of the places on the water are tourist traps, more or less with not-so-great food, and none are ramshackle. I can't think of a place that is and I've been here since '88.....maybe someone will speak up if they know of one, though.

Great old crumbling fish shacks are not Naples material. A day trip to Goodland (the south end of Marco) might help you find what you are looking for. Lots of disreputable places in Lee County where I am from. For instance, there are several very good fish places in Matlacha, which calls itself "a drinking village with a fishing problem". Bert's Bar is just one. Home made potato chips, icy beers, tripletail pulled out of the water behind the shack.... If you really want the polar opposite of Naples, The Ragged Ass Saloon is fun and slummy. Lazy Flamingo on Sanibel (the old one at the north end of the island) has beautiful fresh oysters, super hot wings, great grouper and the guy on the grill will cook your own fish for you.

Have not been to Bleu Provence but have heard very good things about it, sorry wish I could give you a "tried & true" review of it. Have been to Nemo's 4 or 5 times now and have never been disappointed; I work right nearby and we sometimes go for lunch--have not been there for dinner.

Here's a link to local opinion of Bleu Province...hmmm, I might need to go for my birthday in August!

Bleu Provence is a charming restaurant. I have not been since the middle of "season" but I do seem to remember they close in the summer for at least a month. They are very "french" in that way. The food is classic french provencal and mediterranean food, not haute cuisine. Lovely list of champagnes, and many affordable. Lots of half bottles of many wines.

A trip to Naples wouldn't be complete without visiting Kelly's Fishhouse on U.S. 41 at the Gordon River bridge. It's the oldest, funkiest, and best restaurant in Naples. They have their own fleet of fishing boats, and thier seafood is remarkable.
