Papaya (Yonge & Wellesley) Review

Tried this place for lunch today and was quite impressed. They have an excellent lunch special deal, I think it was $6.95 and included soup, salad, spring roll, rice and of course the main dish. There were about 10 dishes to choose from, I had the pad thai which was pretty standard but tasted fresh and was nicely spiced. The spring roll was excellent. In waiting for the food I checked out what others were eating, and I'd try a curry or other dish next time, those looked really good. The salad which came with was a standard mesculun mix, odd choice for thai. No problem ignoring it for $6.95 for lots of food!

The restauarant is very nice inside, looks exceptionally clean and nice decor, however the place was not busy at all, maybe 4 or 5 tables filled and they must have about 20 tables of seating. I think it hasn't been discovered yet, it seems very new, I think its only been open a few months.

Overall it was great value and the food was good, this area doesn't have many good lunch spots and I'll certainly be going back to this one!

  1. I appreciate the review- I walk by twice a day- to and from my walk to the office- and always wondered if the food was good. But as you said, for $6.95, I certainly wouldn't be too picky! LOL.

I hope they do well, I really don't see anyone in there at all. It seems like one of those unlucky locations, none of the restaurants seem to do well there. It's a shame because it's a high pedestrian traffic area.

The food was good though, not just excellent value. I used to go to the Bowl all the time, which is still packed, but lately I have found the food there to be disappointing and the food at Papaya was just as good as when I enjoyed the Bowl, and possibly better. The spring roll was definitely better, really crispy and ungreasy.

    2. I too have had the lunch special there. My companion and I split two of the specials. One thing that struck me, is that the Pad Thai was probably among the best flavoured I have ever had. Now, that being said, the texture wasn't perfect, but did it ever taste good!

      1. Went back again for lunch today, this time the place was very busy and the food was excellent. Tried the curry dish, perfectly spiced and very fresh, it was just great. Also can't get over the lunch special price, its a steal for $6.95. Really glad to see that it was busy this time, I hope they do well and maintain the food!

        1. Just out of curiosity, is this primarily a sit-down kind of place or has anyone tried it as take-out?
I try to avoid sit-down on my lunch break simply because some of my colleagues have a pre-set 1 hour break and can't linger... but if we can get fairly quick take-out, this sounds right up my alley.

The first time I tried it I did takeout, very convienient and I'm sure you could call them and they'd have it ready for pickup. I didn't call first and it was ready within 10 minutes, hot and fresh.

We were in and out within an hour though, would definitely be quick if you arrived just before noon.

What a great find. Good post idea ddelcious! Usually thai food with such nice ambiance is more expensive than what it is at Papaya. I really like their Peanut Butter Chicken and General Ciao's chicken. The peanut butter one is a real winner. Sounds weird but is perfect. The servers are very sweet too. I almost don't want to share this one but want them to do well.

It may have good eats, but with dishes like peanut butter chicken and General Tsao's, let's not mistake it for a Thai restaurant... it sounds more pan-Asian.

Vorpal...so literal! Primarily it is thai with a few spin offs. Pan-Asian usually ends up in a little of this a little of that with no real quality. This has the standard thai food with some chinese dishes (very few). I just broght my family there (all ten of us). Hot damn the service was sweet but soooooooo slow. One hour to eat the main. The previous two times the wait period was normal. Their chicken won-ton soup was really good tonight the broth was rich and peppery.

Perhaps, but apart from pad thai, I still have yet to hear of a Thai dish served at this place... wonton soup? It sounds a lot more Chinese - which is, of course, not a bad thing!

          2. Very impressed with this spot. Been twice, look forward to a third time. So far good service too.
