Apparently from The Washington Post article (linked below), it is quite possible that the inventor of tiramisu has a bakery in Baltimore. Has anyone been and tried the tiramisu?

Funny -- when I saw this article in the Post, I remember thinking how behind the times they were. I heard about this claim right here on chowhound several months ago!

There is a report from schoenick further down in the thread:

When my husband first went in there a couple of years ago after we returned from our honeymoon in Italy, the owner told him that he invented tiramisu, so of course we had to try it. Like everything else we've tried (mostly cookies and semifreddo) it was very good. We haven't been in there in awhile because it's dangerous, so unfortunately I can't be more descriptive, though after thinking about it I am due for a visit...

Yes, Bruna! When they veeeeery first opened it was a running joke in my family that she didn't actually have set prices for anything, because it seemed no matter what we ordered it always came out to the same amount. Loaf of bread, bag of biscotti, foccaccio for dinner, didn't matter! All the same.

FYI, Piedegrotta will be moving around the corner to Bank Street in the near future. (As soon as construction is finished.) The new shop should be a little bigger, with room for some tables.

I read that article and made a special trip to Piedigrotta to try their tiramisu. I was disappointed by it, though - as far as I could tell, it was made of sponge cake and Cool Whip.
On the other hand, the loaf of bread and the pastries I bought there were quite good. I'm still sort of hoping that my tiramisu experience was a fluke, because it was really pretty bad. If you're in the area, Piedigrotta is worth a visit for their baked goods, and maybe you'll enjoy their tiramisu more than I did.

Wow, I'm sorry, but that is preposterous. It's one thing to say it wasn't to your taste or liking, that's fine and that's what this site is all about. But it is another to state an untruth. I just can't let that statement go uncontested for future 'hounds doing searches. To be clear: I have eaten Piedigrotta's tiramisu on many occasions and I can say without a doubt that it is NOT made with "sponge cake and cool whip."

I haven't been but I tried the recipe. Takes more time than others but is worth it. Best I've had since the best I had in Italy. About 10 miles outside Milan airport we went to a little local place. Off the highway, down a country road, over a bridge that must have had trolls. Momma in the kitchen, kids in the dining room chased by grandma. Dinner was good everyday. Dessert, their Tiramisu, was to die for. Anyway, the Baltimore version is 2d best and worth the effort if you can't their, make theirs yours.

Ironically, I'm searching the boards for crab carry out for toinght's birthday party and stumbled on this post...i LOVE thier Tiramisu, altho have to say the last one (in July) i had wasn't as good as the one previous (in may). In our group thou, this is the birhtday request cake, so I just picked one up for tonight's bash, and admittedely...already tasted it.YUM. Like anything that's made from scratch, there's variation batch to batch, but i have to say that overall, their tiramisu rocks! and will be a welcome addition and (as you can tell) a repeat request!

Just to let everyone know, Piedegrotta opened in its new location this morning. They are now, literally, right around the corner, at 1300 Bank Street. It's the corner of Bank and Eden, right below Mustang Alley. I didn't get to stop by myself, but early reports are that the new place looks great. I encourage everybody to check it out!

Had lunch there today and loved the space. It's upscale in a way that reflects the quality of the food, while still being airy and warm and charming. Bruna could not be happier! And now you can clearly see their whole, tasty selection. I had the lunchmeat pie and my companion had the stuffed spinach thing. As usual, it was fabulous AND we had a place to sit. Everyone should swing by!
