best cheap eats on Kona side Big Island

We are staying in a resort on the Kona side of the Big Island (Fairmont Orchid). We would like to escape the expensive upscale resort style restaurants and experience some delicious "downscale" restaurants. I look forward to your suggestions. We are willing to drive but would like to limit our drive to about a 10-15 mile radius.

I don't think there is much within your radius. Cafe Pesto is fairly close, but not much to write home about IMO. Harbor Grill is usually good, but not cheap. Plan on going to Merriman's Cafe and Deli at the King's Shops at Waikoloa resort and get take out. Or drive up the hill to the Waikoloa Market (grocery store). Pick up some cheese, crackers, sandwiches, salads, wine etc. Then have it on your balcony or the beach at sunset....no driving and OH! those Kona sunsets!

The food at Big Island Grill is very good, large portions and friendly service.

U Top It 75-5799 Alii Drive
It is on the main drag in Kona
For yummy taro crepes with great toppings. Very tender and nothing resembling poi in texture. They have savory and sweet toppings.

Sandy's Drive-in...about as downscale as you can get. Local kine food...plate lunch, etc. Hint: the fish is usually fresh and cheap.

Also, Teshima (best Tempura ever) and Manago Inn (pork chops)...you'll hear rave reviews of both these down home places.

All of these places including U Top It and Kona Brewing Co (with the possible exception of Sandy's, not sure where that is) are more than 10 or 15 miles from the Fairmont Orchid. For the OP, just to clarify, your hotel is on the Kohala Coast, which is actually about twenty five miles north of the town of Kailua-Kona, where many of the budget recommendations on the Kona side are located.

Indeed, Manago Inn is south of Kailua-Kona, and could easily be an hours drive from your hotel.

Unfortunately, I can't think of a lower end place in Kohala. Someone else hopefully will pipe in.

Try to get to Kona Brewing Co. for pizza. Great pizza, great beer, great fun!
