1995 Gevrey Chambertin Vieilles Vignes, Domaine Geantet-Pansiot (Burgundy, France): I have to confess a weakness for this producer and for this wine in particular, having first had this in Vincent's cellar while still in barrel one bitterly cold evening in January 1997 -- right before the power failed! (This led to several anxious moments in the pitch black before Vincent -- who had left us in the dark to go to his kitchen to fetch a candle -- returned with a bottle of 1976 Charmes-Chambertin. OMG!) Dusty-red in color, clean and clear, though the wine has thrown a considerable sediment; beautiful perfume of rose petals, crushed raspberries, morel mushrooms, spice and "forest floor"; all this is echoed in the generously flavored, medium-full bodied mouth, with supple, velvety texture and fully resolved tannins; showing excellent complexity and depth, this wine kept opening and evolving in the glass and carried through the long and lingering finish. Excellent! (Imported by Kysela Père et Fils, Ltd.)

And you're talking a village, I assume. Yesterday I had a disappointing experience with another 1995, Rousseau Clos St Jacques (1er C), one of the "big 3" from Rousseau. Too tannic & acidic, in a disjointed way. First bottle in that batch that disappoints.

I have always considered myself lucky that I really enjoy their Bourgogne Rouge as much as I do. I adore quality winemakers that pay attention from the ground up, so to speak. The year to year consistency of the Rouge has much the same pleasure to me as getting into my grandmother's old feather bed. The lumps and dips are all in the right places, and it feels like home.

On my budget, I don't get to invest substantially in any given year and particular bottling. While I like the elegance of some of the "better" (and I'm not being sarcastic, I'm just trying to point out my value judgment here) Gevrey- Chambertin, I don't get to purchase enough of any of it to know for sure which one suits me best, so it becomes a bit hit-or-miss.

This is actually one of the things about drinking wine that has changed a lot from the mid-70s. Year to year, I can generally know (and rely on) less now about a particular wine from a particular vineyard than I did then. Overall I'd say my drinking experience is better now than then - but sometimes I miss some of the old ways.
