My Florist Cafe and Willo Grocery - Phoenix
We had a somewhat large group (7) for lunch today, and the group selected Pei Wei before I arrived. We got to the somewhat new Pei Wei on 7th Ave. and McDowell only to find it packed with no parking, no seats, and a line to the door at 11:25am (whatever happened to the slow summer season). We decided to head across the street to My Florist Cafe, which worked to our advantage.
After finally squeezing in to the parking lot and leaving the car with the valet we were able to get a large table for lunch. I forgot how much I like this place. Very comtemporary room with cool, soothing colors (great for summer). The waitress for friendly and knew the menu well.
I ordered the Baja salad ($9.25) with roasted red pepper, caramelized onions, roma tomatoes, chicken and their baja dressing. The salad came with two slices of their sunflower seed bread. Great salad, not over dressed...the perfect lunch for a hot day.
Others at the table ordered the Cafe Panini ($9.25) that included sliced salami, provolone, caramelized red onion and whole grain mustard pressed in willow bread. The sandwiches come with a small side salad. The panini looked good, and it was hot, but it was not pressed.
I won't go into the whole menu, but there are plenty of salad and sandwich options. My Florist Cafe is a little pricey for lunch with sandwiches averaging $9-10 and salads a little more. Although my Baja salad came with chicken, most of the salads have a chicken add on of $2.75. The food is very good, though, and it was a nice change of pace.
After lunch I walked down a couple of doors to the Willo Grocery. Either I've never stopped in before, or I just don't remember it, but it's actually a nice size store with produce and cheeses on the left, breads and bakery on the right and a big center table with dressings, sauces, dips, etc. Nothing too out of the ordinary, and the produce area was barren (the woman working said they had a new manager, and he was restocking everything today), but certainly somewhere I would stop if it was on my way home. She was kind enough to offer us a sample brownie taste and it was incredible. (No, I didn't see any cupcakes in the bakery case, but there were plenty of cookies, eclairs and cakes).
