Semi-private space for birthday party in San Diego?
I'm planning a birthday party in San Diego (anywhere from downtown upto La Jolla) for a group of 15 or so at 8 pm. I would love to find a place that has a semi-private area/room so that we don't have to scream at each other to hear anything, a full-bar, yummy and inexpensive food for those who would like to eat but don't feel obliged to order food. Would like to avoid pretentious places, if possible. Would appreciate any recommendations!

I think Pacifica Del Mar has a private room. You might want to give them a call. Sibicca may also have one, but I am not a huge fan of their food. It's a little longer up in Del Mar, but easy freeway access (versus La Jolla which takes a little work to get into sometimes). Not sure if they meet the "inexpensive" criteria but it was a shot! I am sure you will get lots of suggestions if these don't work for you.

Jasmine, on Convoy St., has semi-private rooms. It's relatively inexpensive, and they do have a full bar. Definitely not pretentious. They specialize in Hong Kong-style Chinese food, and some of their food is quite good. Some people prefer Emerald for that style of food, but Jasmine is outfitted to set up numerous semi-private rooms. I've always had tasty meals there.
