Gramercy Tavern lunch- rest. week
I had lunch today at Gramercy Tavern (in the dining room) for restaurant week. It was very, very good. While I have been disappointed with restaurant week in the past, I thought the portions were generous and was pleased that most of the choices appear on the regular tasting menus. I started with a calamari/carrot salad and had the cod with zucchini and avocado for the main course. My friend had the chicken, which was very tasty. The desserts were the best part: chocolate bread pudding (YUM!) and cheesecake with huge blueberries and blueberry lemon sorbet. We were both in heaven. They gave us each a $24.07 gift certificate to use for lunch another day.

I had the 'risotto' (just okay), pork chop (divine!!) and chocolate bread pudding. My friend had cucumber soup, trout and chocolate bread pudding.
Overall, a very good lunch!!!!

Yeah, no gift certificate for me either at EMP, which was a shame since I went there in part with plans to use it for dinner soon, thereby maximizing the value of the lunch. Oh well. Lunch was good, so I'm not sad, but serivce was decidedly lackluster. After my last dinner there I thought Bruni was insane not to give the place 4 stars, but on this showing it became clear to me that the service is not up the level of the food. There's nothing bad about the service, exactly, buit there's nothing great about it either.
Food choices for the curious: 1. salad with marcona almonds, stawberry gazpacho (best choice), tuna tartare 2. gnocchi, salmon, chicken (best choice) 3. chocolate with passionfruit, apricot clafouti with great honey-almond ice cream (or was it sorbet?), panna cotta (sp?) with fruit.

re: jasmurph
It was interesting that you brought up the issue about service. While the service to my table was alright, the table next to me didn't get their bread and butter until half way through the appetizer. I was thinking how could they miss such a basic thing?
I wasn't impressed by the ice cold butter either. I expect a restaurant at this caliber will serve me butter at the right temperatue (again, making the basic right). As much as I love EMP in my numerous visits in the past, I was quite disappointed by my lunch today.

re: kobetobiko
We've been to EMP twice within the past couple of weeks -- for dinner and for brunch -- and service both times was impeccable. In fact, that's the way it's always been whenever we've dined there. And, btw, no ice cold butter either. I've never been to EMP during RW, so I'm wondering if that has something to do with these service issues though I must say, in my view, that wouldn't excuse them.

re: gramercyfoodie
Danny Meyer restaurants have traditionally given RW diners at lunch a gift certificate for the amount of the RW meal (it's now $24.07) to be used against a future meal. It appears Eleven Madison Park is no longer doing so, but Gramercy Tavern is. Don't know about Tabla, The Modern, etc.
