Bavarian Food in Phoenix
I just returned from a trip to Germany. Are there any good German places to eat in the Phoenix area? Are there any German bakeries/deli in town?
Went to Bavarian Point in Mesa last year w/ my SO's SIL, she is from Germany.....
It was pretty good.....
I am not a good judge of Bavarian Food......I think I had something like scnhitzel, the portion was huge and came w/ salad bar.....
The restaurant was extremely busy.....it was all very tasty!

I have been to Bavarian Point many times and I love it - although I've never eaten in Germany so I have nothing to compare it to. I do know that the owner makes home made beef stock every week from the best cuts of meat and the sauces really show it. He also has very unique daily specials. The goulash soup is excellent! I talked about a few of the other dishes I liked on another thread a few weeks ago:
In addition to Bavarian you also have Zur Kate in the same strip mall. Farther into town is European Bistro at 951 W Main St. Not sure how German it is though. For bakeries, there is Old Heidelbereg German Bakery at 2210 East Indian School Rd, Phoenix. They have a deli as well. There is also Edelweiss German Deli at 13439 N Cave Creek Rd, Ste 3, Phoenix, and Rheinland German Deli at 717 W Union Hills Dr # 6, Phoenix. Last but not least is House Berlin in Wickenberg. Others have commented on Haus Murphy and Black Forest Mill.
re: Seth Chadwick
i found myself in az for thanksgiving last year. a close friend is now in mesa. he was stationed in germany for 4 years and i had been out to see him a couple of times...... we had it in us to find a german place and throw down some dunkels. went to haus murphy's and had a blast. great atmosphere... we didn't try the food, but menu looked traditional.
Having done all of my Bavarian/German dining in the US, I am not the best resource, but it is a cuisine that I enjoy - half of my maternal family was from Bavaria/Austria. I've experienced the cuisine in all areas of the country, in which I have lived.
I have enjoyed Haus Murphy in Glendale, and would recommend it. Have not been since Glendale became a "happening place," so maybe things have changed. Food was good fare, wine list needed to be upgraded (talked to the management on each visit) and the service was very good.
Unfortunately, I have no other recs. in the PHX area.
