Susiecakes at one year

With cupcake concessions opening left and right (Or should I say east and west?) it's nice to report that Susiecakes in Brentwood celebrated its one year anniversary today with a balloon arch in front and an oversized red velvet cake that everyone could get a free sliver of for a smile. We stopped by and split a luscious chocolate pudding with whipped cream for $4.95 and left with a 5" lemon meringue pie for $8.95 that is the best damn version I've had since Sheila Linderman was making them in the early days of 72 Market St. There was even a drawing for a free cake a month for a year to some lucky sweets fanatic. (I'll report back if I win.)

I also stopped by yesterday to congratulate Susie on her one year anniversary. Susiecakes is becoming a great Brentwood institution. Every kid in the neighborhood has a birthday cake from there. Susiecakes success is well-deserved. Wonderful products and extremely sweet and friendly service. Congratulations!!!!

I stopped in this weekend for the anniversary party and tried a cupcake. It was really disappointing. The cupcake was very dry and apparently mine wasn't the only one. My friend's coconut cupcake was dry too. The strawberry icing tasted artificial, not as I expected. Plus, a small cupcake was $3. If it were good, I wouldn't mind the price.

I'm glad Susie is doing well and all, but their pudding tastes old, and their cakes taste like grocery store cake. For me, the place is tragic.

"Tragic?" Well, clearly you are in the minority. Everyone I know adores Susiecakes. Their puddings are fresh and tasty and every cake I have had has been scrumptious.

Nope. The quote I always come back to is the friend who took one bite of a Susiecakes cupcake and looked at me and said, "I'm in the wrong business." Overpriced, mediocre-tasting.

At least they've finally filled out the display case a bit; during the first few months it reminded me of Percy Adlon's description of Jasmin from the "Bagdad Cafe" soundtrack: "There she stood, forlorn in her loden."

I don't know. I've looked back at all the Susie Cakes posts, looks like more unfavorable posts for Susiecakes.

But, hey, it's great that Brentwood has a place for kids cakes. Just not what I'm looking for.

Susiecakes is a good place to go if you are in Brentwood. Their pudding is delicious. But the newly opened Vanilla Bake Shop in Santa Monica is even better! If you are ever in SM, give their cup cakes and layered cakes in ice boxes a try. : )

Here is a short review I found of Vanilla Bake Shop from a cupcake blog.

This sounds more like a P.R. Press Release than a review.
