Tavern at the Inn at Essex (Essex, VT)

  • 2

My 7-year-old daughter and I are spending the weekend in Vermont, including tonight at the Inn at Essex, which is operated by the New England Culinary Institute. We got a great deal through the American Express platinum card: $219 for the room, including breakfast and a $100 credit which can be used for a massage or for one of their cooking classes. So I have the two of us booked for a dessert baking class tomorrow morning. My daughter is very excited!

My original plan for dinner was to drive in to Burlington; I am somewhat familiar with the options there. However, once we got here, I decided just to give the Tavern -- one of the restaurants here at the Inn -- a try. Big mistake. It was awful. Even accounting for the fact that it's a teaching facility, the food was basically cafeteria quality. Perhaps they're training the Bennigan's, Friday's and Appleby's chefs of tomorrow!

Breakfast tomorrow will be at Sneakers in Winooski -- I'll skip the free one I'm entitled to at the Inn -- and dinner will be at the Alchemist in Waterbury. Hopefully tomorrow's cooking class at the Inn will be better than the cooking!
