Vanilla Bake Shop

Lovers of chocolate mousse, hie thee to Vanilla Bake Shop and get the dirt cake!

Truly, one of the best desserts I've had in a long time. The whipped cream is fresh and light, and the chocolate mousse is exquisite in its intensity. They did not skimp on quality or dumb down the mousse with sugar and milk chocolate. The cake crumbles are slightly chewy like a browny, and actually more salty than sweet.

The best thing about this dessert? It is so reserved in its use of sugar that the aftertaste is just as savory as it is sugary. This is not a dessert that coats your tongue in sugar and makes you thirst for milk or water. Delicious and beautiful. Easily enough dessert for two, $8.

I stopped in on Saturday afternoon - went a little crazy, got 2 full size in red velvet and meyer lemon, and one of each of the minis, which were, I think, chocolate, meyer lemon, mint chocolate, coconut, vanilla and one more.

The chocolate mini was probably my favorite cupcake around so far, and I suspect that the chocolate mint would have been a close second. The meyer lemon mini was oozing with its lemon curd filling, but the full size didn't have quite enough filling, so I'll stick to minis for that one (more raspberries that way, too). I didn't get to the red velvet until the next day, and it was a little dry, but I'll take the blame for that.

My one caveat is that the frosting, which is very good, does get a little soft in the heat. So if you don't have air conditioning, it's something to keep in mind when buying in advance.

The shop is darling and the cupcakes are gorgeous. I'll definitely be back.

I went here this weekend. i tried the mini cupcakes. they make you buy 3 at a time - you can't just try one. they cost $5 for three very dry mini cupcakes. The key lime flavor was great, but the cake was way too dry. the Red Velvet tasted like chocolate. i guess my big disappointment (other than the dryness) was that i took them to go and when i finally opened them an hour later they had fallen over and smushed together. it was hot outside but still... maybe they should figure out a better way to pack the three mini cupcakes they force you to buy. i don't understand why you can't just buy one.

How much was it? That packaging is adorable and I love that it's not overly sweet.

$8 for the jar I got, or $16 for one twice that size (though they'd run out when I got there).

It looks like they're having growing pains because before 3pm they were running out of a lot of stuff.

But I can'st stress enough that the chocolate mousse is not too sweet. It's sweet enough to bring out the flavors of the chocolate and to taste good, but the dominant flavor is definitely chocolate, not sugar. It's so hard to find a dessert like this! Your average dessert is usually overly sugary or bland on flavor.
