Anniversary dinner at John Bentley's - Delicious

  • 0

I convinced my hubby to try John Bentley's for our anniversary dinner (he originally wanted Mountain House), and I'm pleased to say that it was as good as the recommendations from CH and others say it was.

I easily got the reservation on Opentable.com for 5:30pm, and for once, our son fell asleep and stayed asleep thru out dinner. We opted for the Woodside location since it was closer, and we both liked the slightly rustic but sophisticated interior.

I saw that they had foie gras on menu, so I had to get that (love foie gras!)
It was pan seared foie gras, braised white cabbage, quince, and hazelnut sauce - it was served with some toast points. The cabbage reminded me of saurekraut, and I couldn't really taste the quince, and I liked the foie gras, but my one peeve was that the foie gras still had some veins in it, which kind of takes away from the enjoyment of the dish.

My hubby had a special appetizer of the evening - clams and mussels steamed in white wine, garlic, tomato sauce. I think I had one clam, which was good, and he said the sauce was like a soup, it was so good - needless to say, he finished it all up.

When our entrees arrived, the GOOD thing is that our plates were very hot. We both noted that too often the food is lukewarm or warm, not hot, so it was nice that it was hot.

For entrees, he eyed the ostrich medallions, shittake mushrooms, cabernet sauce, truffle cream. This was served with mashed potatoes, asparagus, and carrots. He really liked the ostrich since it was lean and very tender.

I chose the pan seared seabass, butternut squash puree, grain mustard vinaigrette. I forgot that it was butternut squash puree, and thought it was mashed potatoes, and was put off a little by the sweetness, but I guess it should've been a little sweet. I had pearl onions and asparagus as vegetables, and they were fine.

We ended up with banana napoleon, toasted hazelnuts, chocolate and caramel sauce for dessert. It was better than I expected, and ended a very nice dinner.

is the JB in RWC better or the same as the one in Woodside?
