For something simple - and I mean simple, but tasty - there's Waldy's - wood oven pizza from Waldy Malouf. Wine is of the good, better, best variety. No atmosphere whatsoever, but it's cheap and tasty. 800 6th Ave between 27th and 28th on East side of street. Haven't been yet, but there's a new Texas BBQ place that recently opened at 30 W. 26th. If you like BBQ - there's always Blue Smoke - a Danny Meyer place, on East 27th off of Park Ave. Staying on the west side, there's a lot more going on the further west you go. 10th Ave, there's Pepe Gallo to go, a small, good neighborhood Italian place- has a pleasant garden in the back. Lots of artists, esp. after gallery openings (it's in the heart of the Chelsea Gallery area) I doubt there will be a tourist in sight. Also on 10th - Bottino, Red Cat - a good place but loud.
