Tips for Dining, Eating, and Food Shopping in Manhattan

Comment/help with my food itinerary?

In little more than a week I'm going to be in NY with two friends. They are both very adventurous eaters and love good food. Price is an issue though! Here is what I have planned so far:

Friday:
Lunch- Shake Shack
Dinner- The Modern (at the bar)
Saturday:
Brunch or lunch- no idea... nothing too heavy before Babbo
Dinner- Babbo
Sunday:
Brunch- Something relatively near Bryant Park... we are willing to walk a mile or two, but we just don't want to take a cab all the way down to Greenwich Village. A prix fixe option would be terrific!

Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks!

  1. I'm not a huge fan of Shake Shack, but if you go, make sure to get there early. The line forms quickly and becomes long in no time.
What part of town for brunch on Saturday?

Not sure where we are going on Saturday, but I doubt we'll be anywhere near Greenwich Village (except for dinner). I'm guessing we'll probably go to the MET or the Natural History Museum during the day. Nothing south of 34th street would be good.

If the Met, Cafe Sabarsky for a taste of Vienna (you don't have to go to the Musuem to eat there):

        and if Natural History, Telepan:

Or you can walk across the park from/to either...

I agree with Cafe Sabarsky -- awesome. If at the Natural History Museum, Telephan is a bit of a walk (69th St, yes?) and also a bit pricey. Also look into Calle Ocho -- right on Columbus by the museum; or Nice Matin -- on Amsterdam.

          Hey, thunderbug84,

A good option when going to the Met is the Petri Court Cafe right inside the museum. The food's well-prepared and very tasty, and the huge space looks out on Central Park.

Another possibility is the Boathouse in Central Park. The food's quite good and the view is gorgeous!

For Sunday Brunch not far from Bryant Park, I recommend:

West Bank Cafe, on 42nd St., b/t 9th & 10th Avs. The quiche I had at brunch there was excellent. Friendly, efficient service. Very comfortable seating and pleasant atmospherics.

Marseille, on the corner of 9th Av. & 44th St., is a bustling French/Mediterranean brasserie with very eye-catching decor. Brunch menu is eclectic.

N.B. Do not eat at the Bryant Park Grill. Although the outdoor setting is lovely, the food, unfortunately, is pretty awful.

Enjoy your visit to NYC and Bon Appetit!

      2. I highly recommend Restaurant Daniel (60 E. 65th -- off 5th Ave at the Affinia Gardens Hotel.) It is one of Daniel Boulud's restaurants. I was there for lunch and the lunch specials are very reasonable -- about $24 for 3 courses I think. We went to the Met museum, took a break for lunch and went to Daniel, and then walked back to the Met to finish. The food was excellent. You could call and ask for the prix fix price for lunch.

Also, enjoy Babbo. I loved it when I went.

Could it have been Cafe Boulud? I didn't think Daniel was open for lunch.

          1. re: MMRuth

You are correct, MMRuth. Daniel does not serve lunch. Cafe Boulud is on 76th St., b/t 5th & Madison, very near the Met. We had lunch there a few days ago. In addition to the a la carte menu, the lunch special is 2 courses for $32 or 3 courses for $40. Note, however, that Saturday lunch has been suspended until September.

              I'll add Cafe Boulud then!

              1. re: MMRuth

Except that, as I noted, Cafe Boulud is not serving lunch on Saturday during the summer months, and that's when thunderbug84 is considering going to the Met.

                1. re: RGR

I meant add it to the data base of Places - in case it wasn't there!

              2. re: RGR

My mistake! I did mean Cafe Boulud. It's at the Surrey Hotel, another Affinia property.

          2. Thanks for all of your help! We made a few changes, so here is what I have:
Taim, instead of the Modern (too expensive)
Sunday brunch- Telepan (thanks for the rec... it looks terrific!)

We still need a place for lunch on Sat around Central Park thats not expensive and not heavy. By not expensive, I'm thinking no more than $15/person. I looked at the Boathouse in Central Park, but there werent any prices. Doesnt anyone have any more info on that? Thanks!

            1. re: thunderbug84

Re: The Boathouse. There's a menu with prices on Menupages for the main restaurant.

              http://www.menupages.com/restaurantde...

There are also the two more casual venues: the Bar & Grill and the Express Cafe. Those would probably be a better fit for your budget. You could call when you get here and ask about prices.

Buchon bakery at time warner center

                1. re: lanadai

I second bouchon bakery, lovely sandwiches and pastries, fairly inexpensive.
It is counter service, though, if that matters.
Also, if you're in the time warner center, you could put together a picnic from whole foods for the park, or just wander around (good celeb spotting opportunity). the williams and sonoma store is also fun to look around.

Enjoy babbo, the mint love letters are amazing.
