Husband's birthday this weekend - looking for best steak or prime rib in Columbus. Not a fan of Ruth's Chris nor Hyde Park Grille (very bad previous service). Preferably in downtown, Short North or East side. Really want good meal if big bucks are required. Thanks!

One of my favorite spots for steak in Columbus was always the Clarmont Restaurant. Think retro 1950's style steakhouse with solid execution. I haven't been in about 10 years since I lived there...Has anyone gone recently?

I was to the Claremont about 10 years ago on Valentines day. We had reservations for 7:00pm and it was after 9:00pm until we were seated. They were out of 3 items on the menu and they only had ends of prime rib.

My date had medium porterhouse, and I had steak au-poive and the food was all very good. The waiter was very professional and the service was prompt, but I doubt that I will ever go back.

Whoops! Forgot to mention we won't eat at the Clarmont. Terrible dining service experience 6 years ago with reservation time not being honored and no accommodation for elderly, disabled father. Had quite the conversation with Thom, the owner, and he was a real a##***e. Any other recs? Don't want to give the impression we are difficult, but good food served well should be a minimum in any resto, let alone a find dining place.

What about Lindey's? Has always been a favorite of mine. Never been disappointed there.

I have to preface this by saying I usually do not go to Cameron Mitchell places out of principle, but I've had 2 really good meals at the Mitchell's Steakhouse downtown, and the decor is really beautiful. If you don't mind giving some $ to Cameron, the steaks were great and so was the service. I've also had really good steak at the Worthington Inn, but it's not in the area you mentioned or a traditional steakhouse. My parents recently went to Morton's and liked the steaks but were disappointed that they didn't offer all the trendy "treatments" like Hyde Park and some of the other places. They did think the meat quality was great, though.

PS - My b-day is the 13th - happy b-day to your husband! We will be going to Worthington Inn.

Lauren, my DH's bday is the 13th as well. I am not opposed to CMR Steakhouse, but might go to the one in Crosswoods (we can view a movie after). We are having a family celebration (prime rib from Carfagna's, potatoes, creamed spinach and cake from Resch's) Friday night and going out just the 2 of us on Saturday.

Someone suggested The Top, which is right in Bexley. Haven't been there in years - anyone know if it's still good? I heard they changed ownership.

                Sounds great!

I haven't been to the Top in about 12 years, but I saw a review recently and it sounded good. I think it was at www.restaurantwidow.com - she posts here sometimes. I always plan to go there but then end up at my old fallbacks. Let us know if you try it and what you think.
