Madison is a foodie city with a lot of options. Without knowing more, I would say your best bet is go to www.thedailypage.com, and look under "Eats". That's what the locals do.

Oh, and I meant to say there are a lot of reviews of restaurants at that site, and you can narrow restaurants by type of food, location, etc.

Where are you staying? Does "nothing too formal" mean ethnic holes-in-the-wall, or just casual dining?

Lombardino's 2500 University Ave serves excellent Italian cuisine using the local bounty. I also highly recommend the Old Fashioned and Harvest both on the Capital Square and both of which use the incredible array of locally grown and produced food available available now.
