Info about Stillman's farm Meat CSA in JP?

Hi all,

I am writing to this board because I'm trying to find someone who is a member of the Stillman's Farm meat CSA, in particular with the Jamaica Plain pickup location. I signed up about 4 months ago and paid some $800 to the Stillmans, got confirmation that I was signed up, but I have not heard from them since then about where to pick up my meat! I tried all the email addresses and phone numbers on their website to no avail. I was supposed to start in July.

I am wondering - is anyone a member of the Stillman's Farm Meat CSA or know how to contact the people in charge? Better yet, if someone is a member with a Jamaica Plain pickup, can you let me know when/where the pickups are, so that I can try to find them there?

I'm getting a bit antsy, having paid a ton of money and heard nothing! :-P Any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers,
Veronica

Veronica (or anyone else picking up in JP),

Did you have your first pickup? If so, what did you get and have you tried anything yet?

Hi! I talked to Aidan on Monday and he said they've been delayed for July (the slaughterhouse was jammed with July 4th orders). They can be hard to reach, but they're incredibly diligent about making sure you receive your meat.
Once you get it, you'll be delighted - each month, it gets better and better.
As for the cost - it's a lot up front, but I think our overall costs have gone down, especially if you include the fact that we eat out less because our food at home is so much more delicious than any restaurants in our price range :)

I think they may be the CSA that drops off at City Feed, the little store on Boylston St. (near Stony Brook T stop). Perhaps call there and check.

I signed up for this too and was getting a bit worried until I just got an email from them. The first JP pick-up is 7/21 @ Bank of America parking lot between 12-3. The email was just sent out yesterday (7/8), so maybe check whichever email account you gave them first?

Also, I should add that they mentioned having a few shares still available for this and there are alternative pick-ups in Brookline or Lunenburg.

Wow folks, I appreciate the information a ton! And so quickly. I am going to try to find Aidan face-to-face at Copley Sq. I did try the phone numbers you listed (plus email addresses), but never got an answer, so I am thinking face-to-face will be a good bet.

I am glad to hear that you have enjoyed their other CSAs over the years and had a good experience!

I don't know where the JP meat pickup is, but I do know that the meat CSA is run by Kate Stillman and her husband Aidan Davin. (Phone: 413-477-0345.) Aidan works the Stillman's stand at the Tuesday/Friday farmer's market in Copley Square, at the Thursday market in Brookline, and he recently told me he works a Saturday stand in Cambridge (the one off Magazine Street.) You can find details such as locations and hours for all of the farmer's markets here:

Good luck - it *is* a ton of money and I can understand your fretfulness, but I know the Stillman's folks and have been a veg/fruit CSA member with them for years. (Wish I could swing that big payment for the meat CSA myself!) They are great folks and are not ripping you off, but they can be a little tricky to communicate with other than face-to-face. No wonder - they're working the farms and/or in Boston at some farmer's market most of the time!

Have you tried calling Kate and Aidan directly at 413-477-0345? Or, if you're in town this afternoon, Aidan's apparently at the City Hall Plaza market this afternoon, because someone just reported that they bought some pork chops.

Hi vlmwarren. Well, I can't help you out totally, since I didn't sign up for the CSA, but without fail either Aidan or one of his people are at the Copley Sq farmers market on Tuesdays and Fridays. If getting in touch by traditional methods is proving too difficult, I'd just show up at the farmersmarket and ask them what's going on.
