quick destin report
Another year, another trip to Destin. A few things to report:
New place in Santa Rosa called Stinky's Fish Camp is very good seafood with a new orleans skew, the name does not match the menu or decor at all. It's where a place called "The Lake House" or something like that used to be, on the left as you drive East towards Seaside. Good beer selection by the bottle (I had turbodog), nice wine list, several kinds of baked oysters (we had "gratin" with parmesan cheese). Cash only for some reason, which is strange when you have quite a few $80+ bottles of wine on the menu. Maybe they're working on setting up the credit card thing.
The sno cones/shave ice in Seaside is still the best, in the cute little stand right along the road.
Shrimpers Seafood Market is still awesome. Great selection of fresh shrimp, fish, and some great prepared items. We cooked shrimp in various forms several times during the trip and it's really hard to beat shrimp when along the coast - boiled, with grits, in thai green curry, etc. Their smoked tuna dip and spicy crab dip are both well worth the stop. A few miles east of Sandestin on 98.
The Donut Hole remains among my favorite places for donuts. The breakfast items though were underwhelming (eggs, bacon, coffee, etc.). Stick with the donuts - and the cinnamon raisin bread.
Fried shrimp and softshell crab po-boy at The Crab Trap were very good, standard beach-side dining.
We always get the BBQ chicken at Pig's Alley on 98 near Sandestin. Little take out shack that smokes some awesome chicken and serves it with a white and a red BBQ sauce (I mix the two). Great as always, though the breasts were on the small side this year (have been much bigger in the past). We also got pulled pork and ribs this year, even though they weren't so great in prior years. Pulled pork was very nice, ribs very average. Chicken's still the best bet.
Pizza place in the outlet shops? Not so good. It's called Ciao Bella or something like that and they actually have a location in Kennesaw, GA too. Their pizza box has a photo of the owner (I guess) who is Italian, but bears a striking resemblance to Saddam Hussein. I shoulda taken a photo.
On the way down from Atlanta, in Eufaula, Alabama, we stopped at Phil's BBQ, which was very good last year, but not so great this year. Average. Not going to stop there again. Though their slogan - Best Butts in Alabama - is a keeper.
