Dottie's true Blue Cafe (Jones & Geary) has a limited menu and limited seating, but what they do, they do really well. They have an excellent baker working there who is turning out beautiful sweet buns, scones, sweet breads, coffee cakes and CINNAMON ROLLS (with whole pecans and lots of them). Really special. Mostly it's breakfasts and burgers. With a Latino twist. Burgers are organic angus beef. The home fries are fantastic - crusty to the max, yet tender and buttery - best in my memory. They do whole wheat/spice hot cakes. I had a breakfast with soft perfect scrambled eggs (3?), home fries, 2 black bean cakes, corn bread (raspberry preserves - personal fave), excellent fresh chunky home made salsa, sour cream - a lot of food, half of it came home - $7.95. Everything was perfect. When I saw the open faced burger that arrived for my companion, I couldn't supress a, "What a beautiful burger!" The waitress glowed in a way that let me know the staff really care and really like working there. I tasted that burger, and it WAS a beautiful (big juicy) burger. Great atmosphere, Billie Holiday et al backround music, comfortable place to sit, if you're by the wall. I just wish I had another reason to visit that neighborhood. What am I saying? Dottie's True Blue Cafe is definitely worth a special trip (if you're driving that is).

Thanks Niki - I've been meaning to take a special trip out there with all the positive board posts and the article I read on them in the Bay Guardian. You've just added more impetus to my quest.

Heck, I even read today at sfgate.com how actor Hugh Jackman and his sig. other waited in line with the rest of the patrons to enjoy breakfast there - he said they really enjoyed being just "one of the crowd."

Imagine, celebrities in the Tenderloin! Maybe he was there to score...We didn't have to wait at all at noon on Friday. Got a choice table by the window. The cinnamon rolls are exactly what I was looking for! Even if I had to add a little salt (see my cinnamon roll search post of yesterday).

I always thought a "wife" would fall under the category of "significant other"..at least i would hope so!
Dottie's is a gem... great food, great staff...if only they were larger or would open a second branch in my neighborhood!

Glad you got your cinnamon roll fix! And I am so glad you liked them - Dottie's is my favorite breakfast spot - I used to get up early just to get there to be first in line on weekends. It's fun to watch the tourist who are sent there by hotels in the know - the neighborhood is colorful and to watch the reactions is somewhat comical so the line itself is almost worth it! :-) I love their eggs and the fact that you can build your own omelettes - my favorite is my own combo of bacon, jalapeno, green onion and jack cheese - not for the calorically challenged but a nice treat here and there - that man sure can cook eggs!

I have the recipe for those rolls if you'd like them, I'd be happy to e-mail it.

Why, thank you so much Lainielou. You are so sweet to me! I'd love that recipe. And your custom made omelet sounds perfect. I was planning to eat an omelet the next time I go to Dottie's.
Thanks again,
Niki
